This puppet theatre (& workshop) was well worth the trek to the port area from the centre of town tourism (in which lots of less authentic puppet shows are on offer). Tucked away behind the Ibis hotel in a fascinating little residential street we entered this magical world. The show is in Italian (of course) but although my husband and daughter do know any Italian and my husband is not usually a fan of such things, we were all enthralled throughout. Our six year old daughter was treated so well, they let her sit on stage, gave her a backstage tour, let her play the pianola and even made the puppets kiss her. She laughed out loud the whole way through the show! This is a wonderful family business with father doing the puppeteering and his little son (my daughters age) playing the pianola. So very very magical. Lets keep this tradition alive!

Had an amazing tour of the Teatro Massimo. Purchased tickets in the morning and went on the tour. Wonderful to move around the theater and see from inside the main seating area, to an opportunity to see the private royal box. The sheer size and images make this a truly magical space. Favorite place in Sicily.

Puppet Theatre - Siracusa

If you're on holiday in Sicily, especially the Syracuse area, the "Opera dei Pupi" of Ortigia is not to be missed. For over a hundred years the same puppeteer family have been making their beautiful puppets (over 2 feet high), producing fascinating marionette plays which adapt medieval legends from Charlemagne to Crusaders, enacting battles between Saracens and Christians, giants and dragons, fair maidens and chivalrous knights. The magical charm of these plays is mesmerising. Though in Italian with some Sicilian dialect, the plays can be understood clearly by the action and are suitable for any age, including young children who will be swept into the fantastical kingdoms of long ago. (Each play is less than an hour long.) The adjoining puppet museum is also well worth visiting, a treasure-trove of beautiful workmanship and historical tradition.

We really enjoyed this visit and I would highly recommend it and the delightful Katerina who was our guide. The building is in a sad state of disrepair but this gives it a particular beauty. It only cost €5 and takes 30 mins.
