The 10 Best City Tours in Hanoi, Vietnam

May 19, 2021 Malia Yoakum

The charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments alongside. Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or "ascending dragon," but it hasn't forgotten its past, as sites such as Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest. Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi.

We booked directly on the Oasis Cruise website where we were prompted to pick a date and put down a $90 deposit for a 2D1N party cruise. 3 days later we received a notification that there were no cruises on the chosen date despite their site allowing us to select and pay deposit. We were offered a day cruise as an alternative and the customer service team was very proactive in contacting us and trying to get us to book a different date although none of the replacements fit our plans. We then asked for a refund and suddenly, the previously very attentive customer service team stopped answering our emails. We have sent 2 follow up emails regarding this payment we made in JUNE and we still haven't heard anything back. We are very disappointed in the service and support from this company and could see no reason to ever book with them direct, if at all. There are a large number of cruise lines operating in this area and we found a great alternative with excellent customer service.

The guides and drivers at Localmates are the best! My friend and I enjoyed a full day of exploring in and around Hanoi. I'm glad we booked with this tour because we were able to experience places that we wouldn't have known about otherwise. My favorite was the silk village. The craftsmanship in Vietnamese culture is fascinating and beautiful. Getting a first hand look at silk making, rattan weaving and knife making was very special. The train street and cave was also really cool. And of course the food and goodies we had were delicious! Thank you Localmates for the informative, interesting and safe tour, as well as treating us like friends :)

This is my third (#3) walking food tour with A Taste of Hanoi. I keep coming back to them because they are easy to communicate and work with. This is, however, the first KIDS food tour I've been on (and that they might have done). Brian was so flexible and quick to respond to my million questions and messages. We, the parents on the previous tour, had this idea about a kid focused food tour, pitched to the ATOH team and they ran with it. They kept kids safety at the forefront of our tour and designed it around easy and safe walking paths. It was a healthy helping of food tour and educational tour, feeding mind and body. We visited the Ba Dinh Square complex, Quan Than Temple and wrapped up with a wonderful family style dinner at a hidden gem of a restaurant. Overall, wonderful experience.

We were on a 16 day trip through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand organized by Realistic Asia and absolutely loved it! They organized all of the flights to Vietnam and then home from Thailand, as well as the internal flights. They also booked the hotels and the tours, although we did organize some additional tours ahead of time on our own for the leisure days. Each of the tours tended to be run by people local to the city being visited and each of the tour guides was very professional and very enjoyable. The itinerary was such that we started in Vietnam, beginning in Hanoi and then Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh city, then to Siem Reap, Cambodia and finally ending in Phuket, Thailand. Each of the places was different and had things to admire and explore. Phuket was the beach place, although we found Hoi An had a great beach as well. We were very impressed and very happy with each and every hotel we were booked into. They were all very clean, nice and safe and had great staff. Would happily go back to stay at every one of them again. The travel agent who worked with us, David Huynh (Dat) was amazing! He was super responsive both before the trip when we had questions and during the trip when we were unsure about anything. We were on the leading edge of the Coronavirus pandemic and he actually noticed that our original flight to Vietnam was going through Seoul and we would have been forced to quarantine upon landing in Vietnam so he went ahead and changed our flights just days before we were to leave. We then got a notice that our flight home had been cancelled and that we needed to catch a flight home a day later. He went ahead and extended our hotel stay another night. We didn't even have to pay. We did not know what to expect when we booked the tour but after having gone we would enthusiastically recommend Realistic Asia and we would definitely go on another trip with them.

My girlfriend and I had a great tour with Tommy last week when we visited Hanoi. Tommy was such a friendly, professional and knowledgeable tour guide. Despite the cold weather, it was super awesome being able to drive around the streets of Hanoi in an original soviet era Jeep and get to experience the culture, historical sites and food of Hanoi. I would definitely recommend booking a tour with Hanoi Backstreet Tours. P. S. The egg coffee you get to try is absolutely delicious!!!
