The 10 Best City Tours in Azores, Portugal

August 2, 2021 Leida Jutras

The nine islands that make up the Azores are in fact the peaks of some of the world's tallest mountains, reaching from deep beneath the Atlantic. The once-uninhabited, volcanic archipelago now hosts thousands of tourists every year who flock to the islands for sun, sand and verdant mountain scenery. From the beaches of Praia da Vitoria to the bustling marina of Horta, to the bubbling volcanic ground "ovens" of Furnas, these islands offer unparalleled--and unusual--adventures to discover.

Delfim the guide is great. He is very friendly, funny, on-time, knows the area, plans a fun trip and makes sure everyone is ok and happy. We loved the time getting off the main roads and exploring the hard to get to places of the island. Beautiful views and exhilarating experiences. Thanks again to Alice and Delfim.

First the negative - don't do this if you have a serious fear of heights. And if it's cloudy enough that you can't see the peaks from below, don't even bother. Now the positive - however scary some of the trail looks as if it might be from below, it isn't as bad as you expect when you get up to the scary-looking bits. And if you can see the views at all they are wonderful, especially on a very clear day. The trail itself is a mix of different landscapes, first climbing through a mossy gully, then past a green bog full of noisy frogs, then up a bleakly beautiful grassy cone to a lookout point with views for miles, followed by another lookout point with views of a lake, then through heath and bracken, down to some woods around a different lakeside, then a climb up through more woods and lovely plants. It's free, and there is a car park and very clear signage. Take a photo of the map in the car park, you won't need it but it's interesting to look at to see where you are.

I had booked this tour well in advance and was looking forward to it. There I was, waiting to be picked up, as arranged, outside the hotel. After 20 minutes of no-show, I phoned the number and was informed that Algar de Carvão isn't open on Mondays, so the operator had cancelled the trip. This incompetence ruined my trip to Terceira. The tour operator should obviously not accept bookings for days when attractions are closed. I could easily have planned to do things differently had I been warned in time. I asked for a refund over the phone - after all, it was the operator who cancelled, not me - but so far it has not been forthcoming.

This tour is absolutely amazing! It was our first trip to the Azores and we felt like we were in Hawaii. We had no idea that this little island was so lush and tropical. Felipe was a great guide and provided a geological explanation of each site we visited. Absolutely fascinating. We will be sure to book another tour on our return trip.

I did find the service comfortable and it seems to go "everywhere" in Ponta Delgada... But despite the advert they do have only one trip per hour... but it is plenty as both ways I was alone in the bus...
