The 10 Best Castles in Hesse, Germany

December 7, 2021 Brandee Mangan

Hesse (/ˈhɛsə/) or Hessia (German: Hessen [ˈhɛsn̩], Hessian dialect: Hesse [ˈhɛzə]) is a federal state (Land) of the Federal Republic of Germany, with just over six million inhabitants. The state capital is Wiesbaden; the largest city is Frankfurt am Main. Until the unification of Germany, the territory of Hesse was occupied by the Grand Duchy of Hesse, the Duchy of Nassau, the free city of Frankfurt and the Electorate of Hesse, known also as Hesse-Cassel. Due to divisions after World War II, the modern federal state does not cover the entire cultural region of Hesse, which includes both the State of Hesse and the area known as Rhenish Hesse (Rheinhessen) in the neighbouring state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Burg Ronneburg

Reviewed By ilieadrianp - Otopeni, Romania

I have visited this castle last Saturday with a larger group of co-workers and it was way beyond my expectations. First, we had a medieval lunch, with local dishes in place ever since 500 years ago, soup, pork steak and apple strudel (using nothing but a knife and the hands) and beer. I found it really authentic and it also tasted good. Then, we were given a tour of the castle, with the water fountain, the inner tower, the “scharlatan” place and the rooms used for various purposes. Plenty of details provided by our guide (a Canadian lady now living in Germany), plenty of reasons to take pictures, plenty of nice memories. Plus, many people around were dressed up as hundreds of years ago, with different roles. Again, really authentic! Excellent travel back in time.

Schloss Braunfels

Wellcome to Braunfels Castle! It looks a bit like in a fairy tale, but it is real. Located on the very top of a rock it wellcomes its guests from far. Since centuries its owned by the family, which is still living there. Braunfels is a charming little place with the huge castle right in the middle of it. Braunfels Castle itself offers an attractive variety of sightseeing possibilities, which however are a bit limited in wintertime (Nov.- March). Enjoy your stay in Braunfels!

Schloss Auerbach

We love the castle ruins as my son is 2 yrs old and does not have the patience for the more museum types. That being said, this castle is so fun to explore. There are two towers that give such amazing views and beautiful castle grounds to walk around. The price (FREE) just can't be beat! There is a super cute town below that has shopping and restaurants.

Rapunzelturm

About 40 meters high Rapunzel tower in the historic castle of Trendelburg (now Hotel u. Restaurant) from the 13th century. Interesting is the local prison museum and the staircase with 133 steps, the original paper cut by the artist Albert Völkl featuring the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales. Wait for a while before the observation deck in full armor 4 keeper of the winds.
