A 19th-century restoration of a 13th-century castle.
While you probably haven't heard of this castle much, it's a real gem that's worth visiting. It's amazingly well preserved, in a unique location, and tells an interesting story about a noble Croatian family that served the Austro-Hungarian Empire, including interesting hunting trophies and historical equipment. Be prepared for a lot of walking and slopes, as the hill that it's located on is no joke, and the castle might seem "small" when viewed from below, but it stretches upwards for more than a dozen floors. However, once you reach the top floors, you will be rewarded by some truly magnificent views of the surrounding land. Absolutely baffled at the gentleman in the previous comments expecting to find something the size of Windsor or Schönbrunn in the remote mountains of Croatia.

The fort of Veliki Tabor is one of the most important cultural and historical monuments of secular architecture in continental Croatia, with a unique monumental and authentic fortification structure. Situated at the top of Mount Hum Kosnicki, at 333 meters above sea level, it has dominated the Zagorje area for over half a millennium, during which time the architecture has blended in with nature. The impressive view from Veliki Tabor stretches over the entire Hrvatsko Zagorje area and part of Slovenia. This zero-category monument is one of the most recognizable identities of not only Hrvatsko Zagorje but of Croatia as a whole.
I've visited it with my husband and our baby. definitely use a baby carrier and leave the stroller in the courtyard if you want to explore all the levels. The castle looks new because it's been recently restored to its former glory. In my opinion it's one of the most beautiful castles in Croatia. There are plenty of exhibits in the castle, weapons, torture instruments, furniture, horse carriages in the courtyard, different objects. There's also a room dedicated to the legend of Veronika Desinić who still hunts the castle (supposedly).

Dubovac Castle is the oldest Karlovac monument, not just because of its ample history, but also because of the pioneer decision to preserve it in the name of collective memory. To this day the castle on the hill above the Kupa River is the most prominent landmark of the cultural and historical landscape of Karlovac. In the Middle Ages, Dubovac developed as a settlement with a fort at the cross-section of river and road routes, and in an area of dense fortified locations. It was first mentioned in 1339, when it got its first parish priest. Frequently written in Glagolitic script, the testimonies of trade and crafts, legal and school life circumstances of Dubovac burghers-freemen, were most numerous in the several decades preceding 1578, when the Osmanlis devastated its city to the ground. Although not large in area, the Dubovac estate was important economically as a regional market town. Its owners were, among others, important noble families from 1387 to 1810.
Newly renovated old castle is a nice place to visit both as an important historical site and a restful place for a romantic dinner. There is a restoran and a lovely atrium where one can enjoy both the meal and the atmosphere. Restoration of the castle was performer professionally and beside the tower and a floor offering an exhibition of traditional, folk costumes it seems there are other spaces to be open to public. Also, additional info on those artefacts exposed is exepected to be added. Although my visit was during covid19 pandemic I had a nice time visiting it. In the end I bought few souvenirs from the gift shop. Can’t wait to visit it again after this unfortunate pandemic.
