The 10 Best Bus Tours in Belgrade, Serbia

April 23, 2022 Harland Bartelt

Belgrade's long and storied history is suggested by its architecture, which varies from Byzantine and Ottoman to neoclassic and romantic buildings in the older neighborhoods, and from Art Nouveau to brutalism and neo-Byzantine design in New Belgrade. The city's many theaters, museums, monuments and opera houses boast a deep and fissured cultural life while the beaches and rivers attract sunbathers, sports enthusiasts and partygoers on the popular floating river barges that serve as nightclubs.

Our tour starts from your accommodation, and we head toward Western Serbia. Two and a half hours ride, we will reach “The House on the Drina,” an isolated house made of logs on a river stone. We will leave the house behind us, and continue our trip just in time to make it for the departure of the famous Sargan Eight scenic train. During our ride, we will pass and stop on several viewpoints from which one can see fabulous views over Mokra Gora. We've signed up for a tour along Danube that included Golubac Fortress and Lepenski Vir. We've spent most of the time driving and guide Mihajlo was pointing out interesting landmarks and local curiosities and sharing stories about them on the way. We were lucky to get an extra: a tour of local winery - I guess because we were a small group with quicker turnaround. We topped it off with a dinner in a local eatery. All in all, despite the long drive, it was very worth it. The trip was very pleasant and the fortress was a sight to behold. One tip: go in the summer. During the winter the best parts of the fortress are closed off to visitors.

We booked a private tour on a very short notice, but the operator obliged. We've had an amazing overview of Belgrade and Serbian history during the tour of Belgrade fortress (my favorite part was Rujica church). The guide - Mihajlo - was very jovial, knowledgeable and had an answer to every question we had, even the more obscure ones. As we were driving around the city, he was pointing out local landmarks and told us interesting tidbits of history around them. All in all, the tour was great, I've ordered another one a couple days later.
