Lagoa do Fogo

The 4 of us agreed that is was one of the most beautiful places we saw on Sao Miguel Island and that's saying a lot because the whole island is beautiful. There is a steep hike down to a beach area and it's really well worth doing. It was so lovely to be by the lake at the bottom of the crater and listen to the sound of nothing except nesting birds. Amazing.

Lagoa do Vento

Reviewed By kristofkesteloot - Zottegem, Belgium

What a perfect walk! Starting at the parking lot of rabacal. But instead of following the herd of people, we took the road to Alecrim. After some time the trail splits in half. Either you follow the levada do Alecrim, or you go way down to lagao do Vento. We´ve chosen the way down, and it was worth it! It´s a lot of stairs to go all the way down. But what you see is one of the most amazing places in Madeira. It is like a fantasy spot... The way back you can choose to go back up or take the path to the rabacal house.

Douro River

Reviewed By The_Loup_Garou - Phoenix, United States

A Mighty River of Commerce In November, we were once more on the Douro River, or above it, watching it flow. We spent hours on the patio of our room at the Yeatman in Vila Nova de Gaia, observing the life blood of northern Portugal, the Douro River. Unlike our previous visit, we did not have time to take a cruise on the Douro, higher above Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, but we actually had more time to just watch the river flow - the water taxis, the tourist cruise vessels, and then the flow of commerce. Looking out at the replicas of the rabelos, the boats used to bring the Port wines down from the vineyards, far upstream, to the Port Houses of Vila Nova de Gaia, and Porto, I could almost imagine those earlier journeys. Though the River has been tamed somewhat, by a series of dams and locks, it is still a powerful current, heading toward the Atlantic, just a few miles away. In some ways, the Douro reminded me of the Mississippi River, in the USA, with the various types of vessels plying it hourly. Just watching commerce, in various forms, became a pastime with us, and with a bottle of wine, we could have spent the entire trip, just watching this river.

Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools

Reviewed By yagils

We have visited the pools after the volcanic caves tour. Entrance fee to the pools is about 1.5 euros for an adult and 0.5 for children. It worth the visit to see the beautiful waves crashing onto the volcanic rocks forming natural ocean pools. The water during December was freezing and only few brave people went in. The kids though were fascinated of the black crabs climbing on the rocks. A very nice 2 hours to pass with kids even in the winter months.

Pulo do Lobo

Reviewed By 966henriquea - Lisbon District, Portugal

It is just one of those sites that is worth visiting, not only for itself but also for the journey there, to really understand the landscape. And to see how over the millennia this river has carved a deep valley in this landscape, the same on both sides of the river, and also how tiny it must be today compared to the days before the dams . the whole valley must once have been filled with a roaring stream of water. We were lucky to see int at the end of two intense raining weeks, with a lot more raring water than the average visitor and completely different scenery than the other pictures posted here.

Pay at entrance, scan barcode to go through Barrier, go to shop- pay for locker with waterproof electric key and leave 20 euro deposit. Explored the five pools- with various waterfalls and overflows dropping into the red river- all slightly different and all 39oC Favourite spot was in the mystic pool where you could lay flat on the smooth black stone and have the hot water flow gently under you dropping into the river. Entrance into the river itself was shut when I visited. Great place to relieve aching muscles from hiking. Accommodation had given us dark towels for using at the spas- Worth having to ensure you don’t wreck white towels! Tip: if you do not pay for the shower in the changing rooms afterwards it is very cold, you have to go to the shop after you have finished in the spa to pay for it, and they wouldn't let us pay before so ended up having the cold shower as couldn’t be bothered to go back as it was late - in hindsight a hot shower would have been a nicer end to the visit! You need to keep hold of your ticket to leave through the barriers
