The 10 Best Art Museums in Stockholm, Stockholm County

December 20, 2021 Margarita Chappel

The capital city of Sweden combines modern attractions with historic charm. Kick off your stay with visits to Stockholm’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Royal Palace Drottningholm (the residence of the royal family) and the magical Skogskyrkogården, or Woodland Cemetery. Stroll the cobblestone streets of Old Town and over the picturesque bridges that span the city’s canals. The 19th-century Skansen was the world’s first open-air museum and is still a premier place to learn about Swedish history.

Thiel Gallery (Thielska Galleriet)

Reviewed By StevenKolsteren - Groningen, The Netherlands

Spectacular, very good! The house was built in a Art Nouveau/ Secession style for a wealthy industrial and collector. His collection is outstanding, very high quality works by Swedish artist friends, by Munch and Danish artist Willumsen, and a sculpture garden. It is near the ferry to Nacka beach. A great place to walk, rest and simply the best museum in town.

Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde

Prince Eugen's Waldemarsudde, originally the home of Prince Eugen, is now among the most-visited art museums in Sweden. In the Mansion the Prince's Private Apartments remain mostly unchanged, while the two upper floors and the Gallery building are used for temporary exhibitions or for exhibiting works by the Prince or from his collections. The estate is set in a beautiful parkland, featuring centuries-old oak trees. Its situation by the inlet to Stockholm harbour presents the visitor with stunning views of the water. Welcome to Sweden's most beautiful art museum!

Fotografiska Stockholm

Fotografiska is a vital centre for contemporary photography in the heart of Stockholm. The museum is a popular meeting point not only because of its exhibitions featuring the work of world renown photographers, but also for the museum's fantastic view and great food.Previous exhibitions: Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Sarah Moon, Sally Mann, Anton Corbijn and Albert Watson. Fotografiska also offers workshops, courses in photography, live bands, and much more.

Fotografiska is a bit away from the city centre and you need to walk ca 800 meters from Slussen metro station but this is a must-visit place if you are interested in art. I have seen a number of great exhibitions of highly recognised photographers there (like David Lachapelle, Erik Johansson, Nick Brandt, Kirsty Mitchell). If you are an art lover, you must reserve at least 1,5 hours; if not, you can spend your time at the restaurant&cafe that have great views over the water to Djurgården and Gröna Lund. The museum is open from 9 to 23.00. Highly recommended.

A little out of the way from other major museums on its own island, but still relatively easy to get to, the Moderna Museet doesn't look like much from the outside but offers a spectacular collection of modern art in a well presented setting. We enjoyed a spectacular show of Egyptian Surrealism on our visit and superb selections including Picasso, Warhol, Matisse, and many other modern favorites, including well curated selections of Swedish and Scandinavian artists often overlooked in other world modern collections. If you love modern art, you shouldn't miss it.
