Reviewed By KW MFor location, this place is right in the Old City, just outside the locked gates of the Mosque. Essentially a quick walk for you anywhere in the Old City. Pros: Owner and staff were very friendly, breakfast was standard Chinese fare, but enough there for foreigners. Place was clean, well laid out, and well decorated. Rooms are basic, but clean and have everything you need, even the mattress was not the normal concrete one you would expect to find. Cons: Windows are not double paned insulated, so expect to hear some noises from the street outside. Non smoking room, but this being China, that is just a suggestion, you can smell smoke in the room from the hallway, and there is a slight smokie smell in the room, not overpowering by any means like some places I’ve been, but this is China in a smaller city, it is perfectly normal. I tried booking through their website, and got an email back saying the price was 498RMB per night, plus 149RMB agency fee. The payment was to be through Alipay, WeChat or PayPal. I didn’t understand why I had to pay 149RMB if I was using WeChat, so I cancelled my booking and had my Chinese friend book and pay for the room for me. Through my friend the room was 468RMB per night, with no agency fee. This is Datong, it is not Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai or Chengdu, and this place does not pretend to be a 5-star International Hotel. It is a solid 3.5-star. I would have no issue going back to this place again, or recommending it to anyone looking to visit the area. Get a Chinese friend to book the room for you, unless you want to pay extra money.

Reviewed By Pic152Nice location in the centre of the Ancient City, attractive courtyard area, friendly owner. Very cheap beer from a fridge in reception. Good value budget hotel. Basic but decent Asian breakfast. Budget Kangaroo room was a little small but adequate and the Kang bed was surprisingly comfortable. The drainage was a little off in the wet room/toilet but given the price it was still good value for money. Good for travellers on a budget, wanting more than a hostel.

Bigger towels please
Reviewed By happybirthdaytoyouThis is a hidden gem. But be warned, they have space for 60 guests so the place could get a bit crowded in July, August and around Chinese New Year. I was visiting the ancient city of Píngyáo and chose this place from Airbnb and I was so pleased that I had. The lady owner, Iaihong speaks excellent English and her husband’s English is not bad either. They could not have been kinder and more willing to help and answer questions. During my trip to Píngyáo from Beijing I broke my glasses. Iaihong told me where to go and wrote out a note in Chinese for the opticians to see if the lenses could be removed from the broken frame and put in a new frame. Within an hour my glasses were repaired and I was most impressed with the opticians but more so by my host’s willingness to help. My room was very comfortable with a giant bed, a slightly smaller wet room, excellent air conditioning and bedside lighting which is not always the case in China. The hostel does provide food at additional cost but as I did not order any I am not able to comment on the quality. But what I saw others eating, it all looked good and the eaters commented favourably. My sole criticism is that the bath towels could have been a good deal bigger. If you’ve come to visit the ancient city of Píngyáo and are not looking for a 5 star hotel then I’d recommend this place, but I’d pack a towel to be in the safe side.

Tian Yi - Warm Hospitality and Great Alishan 1 stop place

At Alishan, we experienced various degree of hospitality at different accommodations, but none beats the warmth of Tian Yi. To summarize, here are some key points. Location Is conveniently located on a main road but away from the traffic and our room faces the tea plantation and mountain. We see sea of cloud in the morning and evening as well. It sure make the day. A 10min walk away is a small town with 711 and shops where one can choose to have meals. One can walk around the plantation (at night with owner' guide, one can see firefly even in winter which is a rare). Since it is conveniently located with public transport, traveling to places is simple. Hospitality The owner and his wife are a great example of good host. They were flexible to our needs. We requested to have porridge for our baby and it was prepared up to the day we left. She even packed a porridge for us to take away. We were touched by this simple gesture. Food We were treated to simple organic breakfast and dinner. The vegetables were picked from the owner' farm. The soya drink were hand made by the owner. Tour We were taken to place by the owner's wife and showed around FengQiHu and treated to authentic local food known only to local cause it is not easy to locate. We have a good time. Others include sunrise etc. She was flexible and cater to our needs and situation (when it started to rain). We were also given tour of the tea making process and if you like to hand on, you are welcomed too. Owner and wife Both are very hand on person. They showed great affection for their work and did their best to ensure we are properly taken care of. So for someone who rarely writes review, Tian Yi impressed me. It definitely a one stop place for visiting Alishan value for money and did not disappoint. Cheers.

Good Hotel

Breakfast is good, which I took for granted until I went to another hotel with horrendously spartan breakfast. I think the best thing about this hotel is its location. The main shopping area is just down to the main junction then turn left. There are also many services like hairdressing on the small street behind the hotel.

Reviewed By Linda RThis is a well run hotel with friendly helpful staff - we were the only 'westerners' staying here but were very well looked after. There is little english spoken but receptionists do try and with charades we managed very well. They serve Breakfast, Lunch and dinner all buffet style. Breakfast is included in the price and the lunch and dinner costs 25RMB each including a beer.There is no western food available but a wide selection of chinese food is on offer. Breakfast is a bit of a rush and if you get there late -not much left to choose from. The rooms are adequate with a shower, some have a computer for an extra 30RMB. The hotel is just across the road from the train station - very handy . We enjoyed the experience, we stayed for 3 nights.

Reviewed By travellevretThis hotel has been going nearly 20 years, and now may be the best budget option for international travelers. The location is central, the hosts friendly, and they are used to international guests. This hotel has been popular with French diplomats, and a former President even stayed here. The lobby/restaurant hasn't changed much over the years and the walls are covered with cards from appreciative guests and photos of famous guests. When staying in Pingyao, a good courtyard hotel is a key part of the experience, and this hotel fits the bill. The courtyards are charming, and many rooms have traditional kang-style beds, but with soft mattresses, something which is hard to find in Pingyao. The restaurant also serves good local food, and normally also has real coffee and Western breakfast, but this service had been suspended as there are few international guests in 2020. Note that there are tiny rooms, somewhat larger rooms, and even a few rooms with lofts. The tiny rooms have space for little more than the kang/bed and there is no separate shower stall, like in an RV, so be warned! Not having a shower stall is common in Pingyao, but the larger rooms have bathrooms large enough that everything doesn't get wet when you shower. The rooms have good water pressure. AC/heating units, good lighting. Not many outlets or place to put luggage though. Dejuyuan is a good choice to get a feel for living in an old courtyard home without breaking the bank or your back (on a hard bed).

A little oasis

Marvel at the narrow streets and fabulous historic architecture as the taxi weaves its way to the hotel. As soon as you walk through the gateway you know it is going to be good. An English speaking host, sympathetically restored architecture, courtyard after courtyard flowers, greenery, water features, moon gates this place has it all. Even in dusty Shanxi there is a place to rest. The rooms are lovely, clean and all face the courtyards. I will mention that housekeeping was minimal ( nobody made the beds) but didn't detract in any way. Breakfast, although extra was nice as was the other food. If you stay out late you need to bang on the gate to be let in, but it just seems to add to the fun.
