Nelson’s thriving arts and music scene has helped to establish it as a destination for free spirits and art-lovers. Festivals, studios, galleries, craft markets… Every cranny of this South Island city seems to buzz with artistic energy. Lord of the Rings fans will flip for the Jens Hansen workshop in Trafalgar Square—Hansen is the goldsmith who designed the “precious” guarded by Frodo in the LOTR films.

Not for those with health issues

Pros: The location was great, staff were friendly. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The free breakfast is always nice to have. Cons: The room smells like smoke (not for those who don't like smoke) The carpet was dusty (not for those with dust allergies) The floors creak each time you walk around (not for those with an earthquake related trauma?) The walls don't block sound (can hear the people next door talking if you're sensitive to sound) The internet was variable in terms of reliability The bed whilst not being a bunk bed being great, aren't comfortable for those after having done a long trek and have a sensitive back.

Home away from home for trampers

Reviewed By Jost-Pauline S

For two consecutive years we have used this backpackers/motel as a place to get back between tramps in the region. The facilities in Central Nelson are of great value for money and kept immaculately clean. The staff is very helpful and able to point out great spots to eat, arranging taxi rides and flexible when bookings changed due to unforeseen circumstances. This is a quiet place to live and sleep. While we were away we were able to leave our luggage in their store room at no extra charges. The showers had plenty of hot water and towels were provided for free. There is a roomy kitchen and a lovely lounge room, and fresh bread is provided on a daily basis. And due to its vicinity to town there is plenty of good eateries within walking distance from the accommodation. We were thankful being able to get a discounted taxi fare to the airport through the motel reception. When back in Nelson we will certainly know where to come to to get a good nights sleep at great service and a very fair price. Thank you very much Royce

Avoid at all costs!!!

Reviewed By 953euanw

Don't be fooled by the pool and outdoor area, everything else is terrible. The manager is a horrible woman with zero customer service skills. She was extremely aggressive and angry with me and my friends during our stay, regularly shouting and screaming at us over nothing. There are bed bugs in many of the rooms and when we spoke to the manager about this we were blamed for bringing them in ourselves but when speaking to long term guests we found out this has been an issue there for a long time. The rooms with bed bugs were never properly cleaned so this is still an issue. The toilets and showers are not properly cleaned and there is no hand soap available in any of the toilets. STAY AWAY!!!

The fire is roaring, the atmosphere's relaxed, the hostel's warm, spacious yet homely. During these Covid times we welcome longer-stays for travellers and can help you to get work (lots available in Nelson year round). We like to think TBB is like your favourite café - great music, friendly, genuine people. Free Hot Chocolate pudding & ice cream served every night of the year. Inner sprung mattresses throughout the hostel. Currently trialling - Free weekly yoga, movie nights and guests BBQ's. Reliable/Fast Internet - great for working remotely or studying. Off-street parking. Central but quiet location.

I stay at backpackers as meet diverse people always friendly love them.stayed at several in nz. I am a kiwi. This one is like a boarding house. There were at least 4 girls staying there (2from Denmark) who were the cleaning staff. At midnight I opened my door and just looked at the group of more than 20 outside the door drinking and shouting. They moved away but could still hear them. At 3.45 one of the girls went to bed and slammed the door.in the morning there were no clean cups and the sink was full of dishes. They belonged to the girl who I was told is staff. She washed them up about 9am.she is there for 6 months she said.
