PAN KABAN

Reviewed By Lara B

The venue is situated on a cozy side street 1 block from the central square of Uman. It has two parts: a summer terrace, which is a restaurant proper with waiters and regular restaurant prices, and a self-service restaurant inside the building with very cheap prices. We’ve been twice on the terrace for a lunch. Well, the service of the waiting staff was quite pleasant and courteous but slow (it took us nearly 2 hours for a lunch) and far from the European standards. For example: we were served soups, salads were later. One soup was served very quickly, while the other one – 20 minutes after the first one. So one person may eat while the other will watch. The same happened with main courses and side dishes (the latter are ordered separately): they were not served simultaneously for all 3 persons at the table but (as it seemed) as soon as the dishes were ready, with big intervals and side dishes were served when the main courses were almost consumed. As for the quality of the food it was very contradictory as well, Ukrainian dishes like borsch and meat main courses like Chicken Kiev and a kind of cordon bleu steak (don’t remember its name; pork stuffed with cheese and ham) were excellent, while baked potatoes were almost raw and mashed potatoes were disgusting. The restaurant offers also Italian and Japanese cuisine. I do not know how they do the Japanese one, but as for Italian, I must admit they obviously are not keen on it. Conclusion: a good place to have a quite decent eat in Uman, but with cautions.

We've been to other places in Uman for dinner, but Fabrikant Cafe/Restaurant is the best. Smart design and no loud stupid music, big menu with wide choice of dishes, Ukrainian and European. Food was fresh and really delicious (not overly fat or deep-fried like in other places). Orders are handled and served quickly. Prices are above average as for the city, but it worth every cent you pay.Highly recommended if you're in Uman.

Tried out this place when visiting Uman. First we tried out the food. Most of us tried the pan dish. Afterwards we enjoyed dessert and coffee. We were very satisfied with great presentation and even better taste. Then we just had to try out the something from the wide selection of the bar. The attentive bartender made us some superb drinks making a perfect end to a fantastic evening out. The place has a very nice atmosphere and the service is impeccable. We would recomend this place to all you who stay in or just passing trough Uman.

I regret to write, but me and my daughter didn’t feel well after having lunch here. We were looking some alternative place to eat on the road Odessa-Kyiv. Zastava was good, but not really fantastic. We wanted to have some gastro-experience. It took us 15 minutes to reach the place from the road (navigation system didn’t know the street). The place is very authentic country-style cafe. Warned out and empty during the day. I think this is the place for locals to celebrate a special occasion. The prices are extremely low. The food was ok, but several hours later we didn’t feel good. Not poisoned, of course, but... would never come back.

This Meat & Wine restaurant was our best discovery in Uman this year. Modern minimalistic design (which is quite a new trend for this small town) and super delicious steakes make it a must-visit place in Uman. We visited it twice just to compare and the outcome was the same: real steakes (unlike the pan-fried pieces of defrosted meat they call it a steak in other restaurants in the city). Burgers & fries looked yummy too. Good selection of wine (we tried Georgian ones and liked it). It's definitely a no-go for beer geeks: they have a rather limited choice of mainstream beer, bottled only. Almost no desserts, a couple of basic coffee drinks. But if you like meat and wine this is the right place to be. Waitresses are young and not super professional but they are so nice and do their best. And, of course, hats down for their chef. Credit cards are accepted.
