It is the seat of Östersund Municipality and the capital of Jämtland County. Östersund is located at the shores of Sweden's fifth largest lake, Storsjön, opposite the island Frösön, and is the only city in Jämtland. Östersund is the region's cultural and economical centre and by tradition a city of trade and commerce. Östersund had one of the most extensive garrisons in Sweden prior to its closure in the early-21st century. The city is the Mid Sweden University's largest campus site with approximately 7,000 students. With a total population of 44,327 (2010) Östersund is the 22nd most populous city in Sweden, the 46th most populous city in Scandinavia, and by far the largest inland city in Northern Sweden.

A Monday night in January maybe you should be happy to find a restaurant that is open.It is obvious that Ãstersund residents do not go out.There are lots of pub chains , Bishop hold a decent minimum level.Good range of draft and bottled beers. Menu is the most classic, no curiosity stands out.

Had dinner here Oct.1,2015 with Swedish friends. Restaurant is accessed through alleyway and up stairs. Nice old style decor. Very pleasant wait staff. My wife and I had steak meal for 2, Fillet and tenderloin done just the way we ordered. Good size portions and the roasted potatoes and mushrooms were perfect. Our friends ordered Reindeer steak, also done perfectly. Large wine list, although I ordered large local microbrew beer. No complaints, only complements for this restaurant. Plan on spending about 40-50 per person. Worth it!

Tages is a combined coffee shop, confectionery, steak house, lunch restaurant and bakery. From lunch time until 18.30, they serve the dish of the day, which is great compared to most other lunch places in Ãstersund, where "lunch" is between 11.30 and 14.00. The dish of the day is usually a choice between two "husmanskost"-dishes, hearty food with a home made feel. There also is a wide range of steakhouse/burger items on the menu. And it's always nice to be able to end your meal with a piece of cake or pastry. Everything I've tried at Tages so far (+10 visits) has been really great! There is not much to say about the premise, it's ok. A fun detail is that the original sign from the 70's when Tages just had opened a sausage stand next to the confectionery, is still kept as a decorative item in the dining area. Toilets could use a renovation and perhaps there should be one or two more. Also parking can sometimes be a bit hard to find. What I find is the winning point of Tages is that if you're a few people, some might be hungrier than others, someone already ate, someone want's just a sandwich. Then you all still can eat together at Tages!

Highly recommend the local cheese & charcuterie sharing plate. The guy looking after us was excellent. Very friendly and helped us organise a taxi to Faviken for the following day. Good selection of beverages and good value for money. Thank you :)

We had a quick dinner as our toddler was growing impatient. The food was excellent my wife had halloumi salad as a main course and was delicious, simple ingredients, very well delivered. I had the pepper steak and it was excellent. I was surprised they did not check with us how was the food after a few minutes, is kind of basic specially if you serve nice food! We had to leave in a rush as our toddler wanted to play and there was no room for it. Very cozy atmosphere. Friendly staff. Quite big children menu but probably a more enjoyable experience for adults.

Hotel restaurants deservedly generally have a bad reputation. My tour was staying at the Clarion Grand Hotel Ostersund and the included dinner was at the hotel's restaurant. There was enough variety as expected but some of the twists merit mention ie a kimchi mayonnaise, black olives done pitted and as a paste and herring done several ways. Topping it off was a brittle creme brule. Plates were removed in a timely manner by smiling staff. This was my third visit to Jazzköket and I will keep coming back. For me this is the best restaurant in Sweden. The combination of creative, local and love for the food orchestrated by the magician Kristoffer and his team in the kitchen is amazing. Adding to the experience is the wonderful staff and cozy environment frames a "come as you are" scene. For this visit we had the seating at the chef's table and the menu was entirely controlled by the chef. The variations kept coming and every bit was so good and enjoyable. If you are traveling to Sweden looking for a food experience - go to Jazzköket and be amazed! It will be worth the trip! I will keep coming back â¤

Had a fabulous meal. Saw the reviews and thought Iâd give it a try. The meal was just lovely. Really tasty , pasta , beef in a lovely sauce , couldnât finish it all which was a shame because it was delicious. Lovely environment also and the staff are really happy and pleasant.
