Reviewed By Allan L

My family just returned from a dinner at La Casona in Boquete, Panama. We have now been here about three or four times in the past five years and my wife keeps reminding me of why we rarely go here. For me, I keep forgetting my experience after a year or so and I return. We had the Fajitas tonight. While waiting for our food we were given a large pitcher of water but it was left on the table, and not poured into glasses for us. We had time to look around and all we saw was the big picture on the wall cocked at about a 15 degree angle, below which the red paint had long ago been peeled off by chair tops hitting it (this was apparent on all walls)..... The food came out, and it was tastless, for both of us and we experience things like this differently normally. The tortillas provided must have been cut down from the regular small tortillas sold in the stores as they were about 6 inches round and after five of them filled, half the food was still left over with nothing to put it into (not that we wanted to as we left the rest and for the first time since I can remember, we didn't ask to have it packed to go!).The little bowl of tortilla chops provided were thin and greasy..... and the sauce, so-so.While the service was polite and correct, the waitress spent her time talking in the kitchen and every minute or so the kitchen door would pop open, causing us to look there to see what the motion was, just in time to see the door close again as she was trying to see what if anything we needed. Of course, a properly trained staff should wait in the dining room, and be quietly attentive to our needs and not every minute for half an hour keep distracting us by opening and closing a door. Now at home 40 minutes later, we both feel a little ill to our stomachs as the food was overly greasy...... and this time, I was motivated enough to do a review of this place to help me remember to not go here anymore. I have never seen this place with more than one or two tables of customers, and now I know why...... maybe a new owner and a fresh menu and chef and makeover would make this place come to life but for now, I give it a generous 2 stars. PS: I aso noticed incredibly all the prices are much higher now... maybe because they have so few customers?? In another review I just noticed, it said this restaurant had the most authentic Peruvian meals.... I have no idea where that came from in a Mexican restaurant with a Mexican menu!!I know this review is brutally honest and direct, but the truth sometimes helps a place and sometimes hurts.

Everything was excellent! Beautifully prepared and plated food, good service and a nice choice of eating atmospheres. We chose the back patio with only the sound of the little waterfall, so we could enjoy our conversation. We will return, and we sincerely hope that this excellent chef will continue to prepare the foods at Palo Cortao. Many previous chefs have lasted only a few months, rumored to be because they were not permitted to do what they know best how to do without interference.

Casona del Cuzco

We went with a group of four, including my wife who is Peruvian (so I feel her opinion carries a little more weight). With reviews, we always give the benefit of the doubt as we understand how important these reviews are to the success of a restaurant. But we were very disappointed with the quality, quantity, and service speed of the main dishes. The Cusco-born owner, his daughter, and the waiters were all nice and friendly. But the food was below average, for all in the group. We ordered Lomo Saltado, which is the standard Peruvian dish, and if a restaurant cannot get this right, it won't be able to get the rest of its dishes right. The lomo (beef) was very tough and chewy. The fries that they used were not home-cut but the frozen fries that you buy at the supermarket. And the taste was off. The portion was probably the smallest Lomo Saltado I've ever had in my life (and I've had this dish dozens upon dozens of times). The others in the group had corvina (sea bass), and they commented that it was not as good as that of the Fish House (sorry, not trying to compare, but that's where we ate the day before, and the dish was essentially the same).Lastly, it had taken at least 45 minutes for our main dishes to come out, and there was nobody else in the restaurant who had come in before us and who did not yet have food. We noticed that there was a family of 4-5 outside in the balcony who had arrived after us, and they were served their food before us. The only explanation that we have for them receiving food beforehand was that we had ordered soup and possibly they preferred to serve locals quicker as they could be repeat customers. StOverall, a disappointing experience for the price we paid ($70 for four people), and there are frankly many better options in Boquete. While the restaurant is spacious and the chupe de camerones soup was actually good, this restaurant has a long ways to go in terms of its main course food quality and professionalism/fairness in its service.

Dad & I like this place for lunch. They have a fixed menu that varies from day to day, Panamian food. Pork, beef, chicken vegetarian, you get a choice. Comes with choice of two salads, choice of several veggies, and tea. All for $4-5.00. Also, have huge bowls of thick soups. Their food is consistently good, and large servings. Tiny place, if you don't come early, you may have to wait, and if you come later, they may run out of a popular item. If you are visiting, or live here, not a place to miss.
