Klein Paramaribo

We were on the lookout for a ’quick bite’ while traveling. We hit on “Klein Paramaribo “ restaurant. It doubles as a take-out and restaurant. Seats were comfortable and the waitress’ reception friendly. The menu is a staple of Surinam food and not an endless list of choices which is fine. We took ‘roti’ which was tasty and hearty. Do not expect exceptional cuisine, but the food is made with care, love and that shows. The price – quality is good. We would have been fine without the (taped) music which is a weird mix of probably Surinam bands / singers that not always sing in key. The chef makes the difference and his personal approach makes you really feel at home. Adjacent parking is not possible, so be prepared to walk a few meters.

The main restaurant inside the Van der Valk Motel Assen is called 28 Dining, named after the highway A28 on which the motel is located. It is a very spacious and recently redecorated restaurant in faux seventies style. The food was pretty decent and did not take too long to come. Be careful to sit a bit out of airconditionings way.

Staying at the hotel nearby as part of the stay we were offered a free meal in the Dapper. First impression are very good it’s a nice place and gives a good impression.Staff were excellent, really helpful and friendly.Food wise I was impressed. For starter I had the shrimp/prawn skewers and it was 100%.For main course I opted for the meat combination and it was very nice indeed. Everything was cooked well and it was tasty. The meal came with a selection of sides and the staff were happy to provide additional portions if required. But honestly the main course was more than adequate. Really enjoyed it. As a matter of fact ordered the same dish two nights running. For dessert on night one I had the apple tartan. Again no complaints it was tasty. On 2nd night I opted for their Forrest berry cake and it was light and delicious.I have to say I am somewhat surprised with some of the negatives re this restaurant on here. I for one was very happy with food and service during my stay at the complex.Recommended
