Food there is German based, mostly very tasty, and the service staff make an effort to serve well, bring food together, and ask if anything more is required.Being the oldest building in Bensheim makes it an unusual but scenic location.

Nice, rustically decorated place, not too big, not to small in Bensheim/Zell. Can be combined with a walk between the wineyards.

Gasthaus Landgraf

Finally after some recommendations we did visit this “Gasthof” (cozy nice warm place – more than a pub, but not an upscale restaurant). Located in Balkhausen you have to drive 20minutes from Darmstadt – a trip worth to be made. You are entering a room good for around 30 persons, wooden floor, warm light, stretched bar with beer from the tap, lots of spirits placed around (from different brands of give to the destilles from Staehlemuehle), rags filled with bottles of wine (mainly from the Pfalz).Better to make reservations – sure you will fail when you are strolling by.As it was our first time we went for the surprise menu – 5 courses. And we did mention: please reduce the portions as we like to enjoy nice food served on plates which are not too overloaded. The kitchen greeted us: fine smoked jam, salami with fennel, sundried tomatoes, crème off red beet and onions, olives, housemade bread – so much for small portions.1st course: beef tartar with ice from foie gras. Delicious.2nd course: baked pulpo with sauce from pancetta. Outstanding as the pulpo was thin and tender, the sauce impressive – probably a little bit on the salty side.3rd course: a king prawn served on an estragon sauce. Needless to say – superb again. The main course came with 2 (larger) pieces of veal, served on rice (prepared with cream and safran) sauce of (fresh) morrels. In the meantime – us being the leftover guests in the room – we talked a lot with the chef and maître d’, about his (and his partner / friend – the chef behind the kitchen door) where abouts, the wines from the Pfalz which – by the way – were perfectly matching our menu (served in 0.1l glases), the daily life, the paintings at the wall, the demand and additudes of guests, and so on. Not only this openness and friendly hosting but the service in total gave us a perfect feeling. The menu came to an end with a tarte of chocolate with small pieces of icecream (ginger, pineapple,…). He we missed the pieces with crispy textures. The check surprised us as well: such a menu priced with 55Euro and the wine usually around 6-8E (for 2) – it was the first time in this Gaststube, but we will return pretty soon during the upcoming weeks.

We have been to this tiny restaurant twice and both times were excellent. The interior is cozy with a Mom and Pop feel. The service is impeccable - efficient and friendly with no hectic. The menu offers traditional Austrian dishes prepared to current standards. Ingredients are top quality and fresh. My husband and I have tried the pumpkin soup, T- Bone steak and veal stroganoff as specials, and the salmon pasta from the regular menu. Everything was perfectly prepared, the amuse bouche and salads excellent and very good local and Austrian wines. Bring an appetite as portions are generous. Would give 4 1/2 stars if I could!

There are not a lot of restaurants in this lovely old town, but I enjoyed this one very much. They have indoor and very pleasant outdoor seating and a wide selection of Italian dishes. Everyone in our group really enjoyed their meal and the rosé wine we had to go with it. I will definitely go back!

My mother ate here after her appointment at the registry office about 15 years ago. We thought we would see how it is like now and went there for dinner! I have to say I was quite disappointed! My soup was simply horrible and left a floury taste in my mouth, mums food was okay except the potatoes. They were really dry.My sisters food was okay. Let's just say the food was edible, but you don't really want to finish it! Maybe they just had a bad day...

Muehlstein Bensheim

This former antiques show room was changed some years ago to a restaurant and is tastefully and comfortably furnished and appointed. A very pleasant atmosphere but quite a large area and so for me, lacking in 'Gemütlichkeit' or intimacy which for most people may be irrelevant. The welcome is very warm and efficiently handled. There is a table d'hote menu together with the limited a la Carte menu. This limited menu is quite a good idea, allowing the kitchen to concentrate on doing a few dishes, but doing them well. We were a party of six and all were satisfied with quality and quantity of the meals. The one small complaint was that the House wine that was served had been sitting too long in an open bottle and so tasted oxidised. It was mentioned to a staff member but no response was forthcoming other than a rather negative frown. Finally, in my view, this is not a restaurant suitable for small children.

As the name suggests this restaurant is established in an old brewery. The interior is one with dark beams and tables placed in two rooms at both sides of the entrance. There also is an outside beergarden where drinks and food are served as well. It is a busy place, particularly in the weekends. The menu features a limited choice of dishes which are served in generous portions. Straightforward German cooking without being fanciful or modernistic. Good food in a pleasant atmosphere.

Blauer Aff

I am frequently in Germany for my business, and I learnt in the meantime some of German food tradition.Together with colleagues I have been recently at Blauer Aff.Very special restaurant from outside as well as inside. And this was already attractive. The dining rooms are different one from the other: I liked very much the idea of organizing an area inside like a summer dehor... brilliant and well designed. Other areas are more in the old tradition with stone walls, old farm tools...Also the food is in the local tradition, but there is the soft attempt also in searching and well contaminating from other nation food traditions.I like in general Tomato Soups as made in many restaurants in Germany. And it is quite normal for me to start dinner with it when available. So I did it as well at Blauer Aff. What an amazing surprise the Tomato Soup with Burrata and Basilikum! Great idea from the chef. It was delicate, but full of taste. Delicious. I enclose also the photo as I loved it, even if I know very well the picture is never really representative of the food experience.Take a dinner at the Blauer Aff and try their proposals. My colleagues had other dishes that they liked and also myself. But the tomato soup with burrata remains for me a Must-try-it!!!
