Taunton /ˈtɔːntən/ is a large regional town in Somerset, England. The town currently peaks at a population of 69,570 as of 2018. The town itself has over 1,000 years of religious and military history, including a monastery dating back to the 10th century and Taunton Castle, which has origins in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory. The Normans then built a stone structured castle, which belonged to the Bishops of Winchester. The current heavily reconstructed buildings are the inner ward, which now houses the Museum of Somerset and the Somerset Military Museum.

The food was simply perfect, ambience and service excellent. This is one of the best places to eat in Taunton -such care and attention to detail both with the cooking and presentation. Front of house very friendly service which makes for a great atmosphere and we felt so welcome and at home here. Went for the first time in an evening and liked it just as much as during the day. Nice surroundings, efficient and polite staff, reasonably priced. They have a great selection of spirits if you're into cocktails. Only downside is they don't have Fevertree tonic water so spoiled my G & T a bit as I had to have a really heavy alternative.

Having been given some Sheppy's vouchers for my birthday, I emailed them to see if I could use them in their Apple Bay Restaurant and Bar, a prompt reply said that I could.So finally agreeing a date with my daughter and son, the three of us, booked a table for a Friday night.When we arrived at the restaurant, we liked the slightly quirky feel and comfortable ambience. The two members of staff who served us ,throughout the evening, were professional, welcoming and friendly.All the food, we had was very good , Starters - crab cakes, ham hock/chicken terrine and mushroom soup(gluten-free bread) for my daughter. Mains battered haddock and two excellent steaks. We shared a cheeseboard , to finish, loved the selection.Throughout the night, we tried various ciders from the Sheppy's range and like the food we weren't disappointed with them.Thanks to the vouchers, we have found a restaurant, that we all agreed will be revisited again.Hello SomersetKeithers,Thank you for leaving us such a good review. Eight of us went out for a mid-week dinner here following a recommendation. We were surprised at how busy it was - both dining areas were almost full and there were several drinking at the bar. Our table was booked for 7.00 pm but we had a long wait before anyone took our order and that was prompted by us having to ask if someone would come to our table or if we had to order at the bar. When our meals did turn up they were beautifully presented and my husband and I were very pleased with ours. I had hake with various summer vegetables and my husband had a burger with salad, coleslaw, gerkin and chips. That meal was served on a rectangular platter/chunk of wood and my husband said he would have preferred a 'proper' plate so that he didn't have to concentrate so much on preventing the food falling off the platter. Several others in our party had belly pork and enjoyed it although one said it was too dry and asked for some sauce/gravy. Others had fish pie and would have preferred a bigger range of fish such as smoked haddock or trout or shellfish as well as white fish. Puddings were generous and delicious and service at that stage was prompt. Settling the bill on an individual/couple basis was easy unlike some places where we've had to work out our own share of a composite bill.

So perhaps a wet Tuesday lunchtime was not the best time to get the full experience.The place is huge and was largely empty when we arrived. Nothing wrong with the food, steak sandwich was well cooked and well seasoned. It also arrived promptly, which is not surprising given that it was so empty. Lunchtime bar service was slow. Not sure if staff were new as there seemed to be challenges operating the till. Also seemed to be a general disinterest and not a very warm welcomeHi there, thanks for taking the time to review us, we're glad you enjoyed the food! This past week we have had a new till system installed. This is very exciting but has taken a little time for the team to get used to using.
