Ars Vivendi

Reviewed By eelco2013

We were taken to this restaurant by a local friend who knows Schwerin well. Vivendi is supposedly 1 of the 2 very best restaurants in town. And indeed, we the food here was of outstanding quality. The menu featured appealing sounding Italian dishes, appetizers as well as main courses. The 3 of us ordered all a different meal, and each of these was of very fine taste and quality indeed. For a warm summer's evening, it was a excellent choice as we could sit outside in the quiet garden. Our casual clothing was no problem at all (because of the warm weather, all 3 of us were dressed in shorts, polo's and sneakers). Don't forget to try one of those very nice deserts! I have never had a better crème brulé anywhere else before. If you don't know of this place, you wouldn't find it easily by chance, as it is not in the middle of the city center, but somewhere hidden in the vast gardens that surround the city castle. This restaurant used to be a tea house belonging to the castle's original residents. An excellent choice for a quality dinner in very peaceful surroundings!

I have been to Seewarte restaurant twice already and was never disappointed. It is located next to a lake near the town centre and offers locally sourced dishes, mainly fresh fish. It is unpretencious, homely, cosy and friendly. We were able to take our well behaved dog with us without problems! The restaurant offers also meat dishes, but no pasta. There is limited availability of vegetarian dishes. As in this part of Germany, you will only find people with limited command of the English language, so you better bring a German friend along to do the translating! All in all, it is a nice and moderately priced traditional restaurant with an emphasis on locally sourced fresh seafood. It gets very popular on weekends, so a reservation comes in handy.

The restaurant is located in the city centre and may easily be overlooked. Don't do i!The restaurant has all what you can ask for for - and more. A great selection of small and big dishes, a wide range in type and ingredients and all served appealing after reasonable waiting time. We were 3 guests and chosed 3 different dishes. We were all happy about our selection. The beers were good and cold and served after a short time. Several wines were on offer. Prices are fair. I am sure that most people can find a menu and beverages that will make him, or her, happy. We would like to come come back again.

What to say about this place? We just went there for Friday dinner to celebrate the start of our holidays. It is situated in a historic building near Schwerin Castle in the centre of town. There is ample space to sit outside, but at this time of year, it still tends to get chilly at night, so we preferred to sit inside. At the entrance there is a little wine shop and the interior tries to be modern with very high ceilings. As it is asparagus season in Germany, we went for the asparagus soup for starters. Unfortunately, there was bacon in the soup, which was not mentioned on the menu. That meant my vegetarian girlfriend could not eat it. I tasted the bacon and it was so heavily cured, it was unedible. Shame. Such a real shame. The waiter, who took away our dishes neither offered an apology nor made any attempts to rectify the mistake. The main was white asparagus with new potatoes and melted butter; a Schnitzel on top for me. The totally curdled 'Hollandaise sauce" managed to completely ruin our culinary experience in Schwerin and left us utterly underwhelmed and unimpressed. On top of that, the food was drowned in dried "edible" blueish little flowers. Needless to say they could NOT reverse the damage previously done to the food in the kitchen. When we asked for the bill, the waiter had not deducted anything of the bill, so embarrassingly, I had to ask him to take off the soup. He sounded surprised, as if we had not previously told him what was wrong with the soup in the first place and replied: "why, the soup was good".... I was lost for words for a change (this does not occur very often). In the end the grotty "service" and the rotten food lets this place irreparably down and that waiter deservedly did not get any tip from us. Serves him right, eh?Can one be any more disinterested in their own guest's wellbeing and satisfaction? Even so, how about the restaurant's reputation? Evidently, they still have lots to learn...I have been to many places in and around Schwerin now and regretfully one has to testify this is the culinary "Nirvana" of Germany with little or nothing happening that could excite a gournet's palate.

Restaurant LUKAS

Reviewed By Trainbleu

As Restaurant Lukas claimed to be the only fish restaurant in Schwerin we wanted to try it out although it didn’t look very attractive, neihter outside nor inside. We ordered sea bream fillet with tomatoes, fennel and chives risotto and a ‘Lucas plate’ with pikeperch, salmon and cod filets with baked potatoes and mixed vegetables. The seabream and vegetables were nice enough but the risotto didn’t taste right. Either it was overcooked or the wrong rice had been used. The fish plate was a disappointment. The fish looked dry and rather unappetising. Some of it had no taste at all. Service was amiable and prices were reasonable.
