As usual, a disappointment in Hälsingland. The old beach restaurant at the Maln beach outside Hudiksvall was a disaster and we were hopeful for this acquisition and restart. The result, unfortunately, doesn't live up to our expectations. The new owners are trying to run Maln as a "fine restaurant", but fails grossly. The menu is boring and standard and the food doesn't live up to the pretentions. We first tried a steak in red wine sauce, which was requested as fried to medium, but arrived well done. The meat was decent, but standard. Not very interesting. The second attempt was a sole wrapped "en cocotte", not in paper as in France, but strangely in aluminium foil. The fish was grossly overcooked and unspiced. Boring is the only word available. The third course was a burger which was grossly large and made from dry and unspiced mincemeat. Not satisfactory. The problem with this restaurant is that they are overshooting. Instead of trying to create a place for fine dining, they should have settled for making it into a hipster style beach club, with more basic food of better quality, more laid back and with less pretention. I've been to numerous basic beach restaurants in France and Italy which create far better food that this, without the pretentious fanfare (refer to my review of Mu.Ma. Beach restaurant in Olbia, here on TripAdvisor). The staff was confused and inexperienced. This didn't make visit any better. The toilets are awful. Will we come back? Yes, maybe, but not with any enthusiasm.
