The picturesque town of Mechelen, a hidden Flemish gem, sits between Brussels and Antwerp. Students of the world-renowned Carillon bell-ringing school provide an atmospheric soundtrack for sipping coffee at a sidewalk café in one of the town's charming squares. Many pedestrian areas make this a delightful town to promenade about, admiring hundreds of listed buildings and monuments, many dating back to 16th century. Highlights include Gothic and Baroque churches and the famed St Rumbold's Tower.

Great stay

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. We had planned to stay at Het Anker, but they were booked, so this was our 2nd choice. The hotel was great - comfortable rooms, nice bathroom with large shower, incredible sound-proofing. The breakfast was extensive and very good. Good service from the staff. The only downside is the location - the hotel shares a parking lot with a casino and a McDonald's and is located across a busy road from the old town, so not a pictuesque spot. The location wasn't a huge deal - walk across the parking lot and cross at the light - but it wasn't ideal.

On booking.com extra comment was added, honeymoon trip. No acknowledgement was received from the hotel regarding this. Emails we received was over and over again to upgrade the room and extra services. Little acknowledgement of congratulations and thank you for choosing us was enough as customer service. Easy fast check in. Room location was well explained. The room itself was very nice, size wise and clean. slippers, bath rope and extras were foreseen. Also there was a little welcome card with a cookie for the honeymoon. Thank you.

Bad Experience

Reviewed By RAPHZAGN

Hotel with large rooms and an empathic and gentle crew. Problem comes in the way they choose their partner for food. The restaurent embedded in the hotel is advised closing at 10pm but at 9:24 you’re advised that kitchen is closed. Very unprofessional, travelling almost weekly to Kontich, I won t choose this hotel anymore because of their service level for diner.

I booked for our family, being 2 adults and 2 kids. Asked it in advance. No problem they said, we will prepare the room for it. I ended up making up the extra bed myself (a hard bankset where our 2 kids merely fitted on) with only a one-person blanket, after going to the reception to ask the extra blankets 4 times. Only 2 set of towels, but didn’t have the courage to go down to ask for a second set of blankets and extra towels again... Breakfast great!

NH Mechelen has a good location and friendly staff. Beds are decent and breakfast is OK. BUT: (1) While certain parts of the hotel (e.g. reception and breakfast room) are somewhat renovated, other require urgent renovation and are far below the NH Hotels standard I'm used to (please refer to the pictures of room 506 attached), (2) A pungent sewage smell is present throughout the hotel, (3) The parking is limted to cars < 165 cm (so SUV's cannot use it), (4) The airco is very, very old, makes a huge noise and does not work adequately, (5) And all this for 186 €/ night (breakfast included), which is far too expensive for the poor quality offered. See pictures attached: (1) Curtains which could not be closed (30- 40 cm), (2) Curtains with a lot of holes, (3) Dead insects on the the window, curtain and at the coffee machine, (4) and (5) Furniture with all over scratches, (6) A new door lock was installed but the remains of the previous system were not removed.

Holiday Inn Express Mechelen City Centre, an IHG Hotel

Perfect location, super nice staff, decent accomodations, very tight parking.

The staff in this hotel are really good. They go out of their way to be helpful and friendly. They are also very good about recommending things to do if you are staying over the weekend. The location is fantastic. Breakfast was no frills, but super consistent and it was nice that this was included. Parking is expensive and the spaces are remarkably difficult to get in and out of, but that's normal for a small, historic city like Mechelen. I have stayed at this hotel for business many times and I keep coming back because of the consistent service and excellent staff.

Charging during pandemic

Had a booking here for Tomorrowland weekend. Festival was obviously cancelled and posponed for 1 year and we tried to change our booking for next year. Hotel still wants to charge it and only offers voucher valid 1/21 or 20% discount for next booking. Charging for bookings made pre coronavirus era is pretty low and scummy. Quality family business

Coming from the Basilique opposite we found ourselves in a Sunday morning gathering of locals. All having a white wine, a Carolus beer or just a coffee. We had a lovely vol-en-vent (chicken and sause). The place houses 6 hotel rooms which have been redecorated recently. A lovely modern place with friendly family staff. We will certainly come back.
