This self service cafe is within the Massen shopping centre where we stopped off to stock up on cheap booze before leaving Luxembourg. The two of us had a regular coffee each (best on this trip) and a pastry each. The cakes were top notch and the whole lot at €9.10 was very good value.

Restaurant Altes Backhaus

I was visiting friends near Amel in Belgium and we decided to drive the few kilometers into Germany for dinner and stopped at Altes Backhaus. Decor is “light modern”, rather than “dark wood and beams” and feels pretty welcoming, though not very “atmospheric”. The menu was fairly extensive with a good range of starters and main courses – lots of pizzas and schnitzels with some salads, steaks and fish. To start I chose pizza bread with cheese (4.20), which turned out to be a whole pizza with a good topping of cheese with garlic and herb butter – delicious. My friends tried the baked prawns in garlic butter (8.50) and the baked Camembert (4.90) and pronounced them as excellent. For the main course I decided on the schnitzel with “paprika” sauce (11.00). The schnitzel, served with fries and a side salad, was well cooked and the sauce, made with sweet peppers and onions, was slightly spicy and really added to the dish. My friends had the schnitzel topped with tomatoes and cheese (11.50), the Cordon Bleu, a schnitzel with a ham and cheese filling (12.50) and a roast half chicken (9.00) – again all well cooked. Portion size was very good and we decided to pass on desert. To drink we had 4 beers (2.20 each), a glass of house white wine (3.80) and two apple juice (2.20 each).Overall I felt we had a pretty reasonable dinner – the food was simple, but well cooked and presented and at 82.80 for four, was good value. Service was friendly and efficient and I would probably eat here again if I was in the area.

Haus Mannertal Restaurant

This was a lovely place to find and came recommended by a local. It's a very busy restaurant but the staff are really friendly and fitted us in at the bar table. This has board games layed into the table so if you feel like it, you could play chess whilst waiting for your food (though we didn't). The meal started with home made bread and garlic butter which was delicious and all in all, the food bill came to around 40 Euro for both of us so not expensive. The French onion soup is delicious and the main course was also very good. There is an outside seating area if the weather is good too. All in all, it was a very pleasant experience and I can highly recommend this little restaurant.
