Kathu is a town in South Africa, and the iron ore capital of the Northern Cape province. Its name means "town under the trees", after the Camel Thorn forest it is situated in. The phrase "the town under the trees" was coined by an engineer working in the town in the early-1990s as part of a tourist marketing drive, together with the accompanying graphic. It was intended to be a marketing slogan. The meaning of the word "Kathu" has anecdotically been attributed to a porridge brewed by the local population from the powder found in the pods of the Camel Thorn trees.

I went here with a coworker for dinner the other night. We both ordered from the burger section of the menu. He had a chicken burger and stated the chicken was very small and the bun engulfed the patty. I had a burger with bacon and biltong. It was very average. We had fries with our meals. They were basically raw potatoes dipped in hot grease and dumped in a container. My burger came with a couple of onion rings and I ordered an extra order. The rings came to the table greasy, cold and doughy. Thankfully the side order of rings didn't arrive. The rings and fries were terrible.

I have been traveling to Kathu over many years and seen the town develop. Katexas has been a firm favorite even we have not been staying at Namakwari Lodge, where it is situated, because the food is pretty good and the quality is good. Service is good and if you get one of the seats out on the patio it's a great way to spend lunch and dinner. Nice cold beers and a good wine selection

Spoil your family & eat out at Colorado Spur. We are the best steakhouse & burger restaurant in Kathu. Bring along your kids for some great tasting food & dessert from our famous Spur menu.
A Spur is a Spur, the staff just as eager and friendly, even on a busy evening. I had a good meal and the rest as they say is history.

Experience a truly South African dining experience at Nando's in Kathu. Our flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken restaurants are world famous for their succulent, grilled to perfection, butterfly-cut chickens. Add spice to your life with a meal from our Portuguese style menu. We've set the eating experience on fire and we can't wait for you to join our table because if there's one thing we love as much as PERi-PERi, it's lots of people to enjoy it with!
Dinner options in Kathu were strangely lacking...we had aimed for the Mugg & Bean, but they closed at 6pm. Having fish in the Kalahari didn't scream to us, so we wrote off John Dory's and Ocean Basket. McDonald's and KFC...we can get those in Kent, if we're feeling self-abusive. So...Nando's.
First, they were open. The food was a bit salty, but Peggy had a surprisingly quality hot pot with chicken, and outside of the sodium content I thoroughly enjoyed my peri-peri crusted chicken wings. The best surprise was the very low-cost side-salad I ordered...which was incredibly large, fresh, and very welcome. The staff provided very good service for a fast-food restaurant, and ultimately there was little to nothing to complain about that wasn't sodium-related.
It's not fine dining, but for an above-average, quick meal in Kathu, this is a great option.
