Wow - the most memorable hotel stay in NZ

We travelled from north to south, stayed in five star hotels , bungee jumped and black water rafted - but our Silverstream Alpaca stay remains our favorite memory in New Zealand. Here we arrived circa 4:30pm, in time to meet the owner Kit, to walk the paddocks and meet the Alpacas and even to help feed two newborns. Alpacas don’t smell, and are endearing, smiley, love able creatures. Unlike mass market farm stays , this is a boutique experience in an idyllic spot, with very limited overnight accommodation in charming B&B family cottages. So you won’t be sharing the experience we more than one other family. Clean, soft and comfortable , we loved shopping in the nearby supermarket to eat in - to allow for one more evening stroll on the premises. This was fantastic for our teenage children and for us and we congratulate Silverstream Alpaca on having created the ideal alternative experience to a hotel stay in Christchurch and a MUST do NZ experience! Simply amazing !

Spent the night there. Budget accommodation but if that what you want it's perfect. Bonus having a public house at the gate of the site so somewhere to eat mix and mingle. Is by a main road but couldn't hear anything. Bird song in the morning was pleasant.

Had they forgotten that guests were coming?

Reviewed By Mollybirds

It was a hot day, we put our drinks in the fridges to subsequently find the fridges were not turned on. One fridge had to be actually pulled out into the room to turn it on (or off for sleeping because it was noisy). There was no milk but fortunately we had brought our own, (the landlady did offer her husband to go to the supermarket to fetch some for breakfast, so that would have been okay eventually). A plumber had been working in one of the bathrooms and I had to clean the basin, black greasy tap, floor, (of plaster debris) and shoe prints off the shower. It looked like the plumber had used the hand towel. It wasn't really bad but I had by now regretted our choice of accommodation and the general lack of cleanliness was starting to show, eg dust and dirty cushions and comforter on the bed. We were not offered the use of a lounge and only had our rooms to sit in. One room was upstairs, one downstairs. The downstairs bed had comfort issues with the electic blanket wires feelable through the sheet. To comply with the landlady's request to turn off the stair light, where the switch was only findable at the top of the stairs, I would have had to walk down the stairs in the dark, (health and safety issue) so I felt badly about not complying and probably making myself unpopular. I was treated as a big nuisance for asking for the WiFi code and told that I should use my own mobile service. My son did get this sorted. At breakfast the only fruit was tinned peaches and we were told by the landlady that she had just breakfasted on fresh blueberries. There was cornflakes and muesli, plain yoghurt, Vogel's toast, poached egg and bacon. I was about to get some jam from our car as no spreads were on the table. It transpired that they were available on request and the half empty jar of jam was brought to the table. Linens were not professionally washed, and there was no hand sanitiser, unlike at the eleven other establishments that we stayed at on our South Island odyssey, some of which cost less than Oakhampton Lodge. We enjoyed walking around the garden which is why the lodge was chosen by us. The landlord was fun to chat with but he left the running of the lodge to his wife. This certainly wasn't value for money: we paid for two rooms which was good earnings for the landlady, but sadly we were considered an inconvenience.
