Great place

We are on a trip staying for 10 days in Colombia and booked 2 nights here, because of what the travel reviews advised for the rosarios islands. Big mistake. We should have done a week here. We ended up booking another night and taking the hit on the prepaid hotel in Cartagena. This is a stunning location. Simply stunning. Its not a hotel it's a resort. Lots of space lots of privacy. Lots of trips to do ( snorkeling, sight seeing, oceanarium swimming with dolphins kayak tours in the mangroves et etc). Great free snorkeling around the resort. Free use of the resort kayak etc. Let's clear up a few unfounded concerns we had: 1. early arrival before check in and late afternoon departure...you have full access to all the facilities, toilets, showers, free cold drinking water, fresh outside towels, lunch sunbeds etc. You effectively get an extra day. 2. Bar and food prices as you have no alternatives. They are dearer than SOME places in Cartagena but not all and not by much. Drinks and cocktails same as most popular bars in Old Town.. £2.50 cold 33cl beer and £7 for a average cocktail. Food prices for house salad £7 , fish of the day £13, lobster £35. Still great value, on a beautiful island 45 mins from the city. Freebies...fresh fruit juice and free dessert with your meals. Free coffee & free drinking water. To compare day trips to neighbouring resorts are £60 for 1 hour there 1 hour back and max of 5 hours on an island. Book direct for better deal. In short....one of the best places we have stayed. Go enjoy.

run down hotel at a very nice resort

the place is just beautiful. nice pool, beach, the lagoon. much nature around and the island is nice as well. the staff was very friendly and always helpful. still, most things took hours, the processes seem not really to work & the staff dont know what to do. we stayed there for 3 nights and would recommend to only go there for a daily excursion and return to Cartagena in the afternoon. the prices were extremely high (about 100 dollars for one night) and the hotel isnt worth the money. the rooms are dark and very very old. it seems they werent updated since the hotel opened in like the 80ies. the worst bathroom.I have seen in 3 weeks in Colombia. the bed isnt comfortable at all. & the worst of all: they will charge you the most expensive prices in whole Colombia for food, finns to go snorkel, beer and even water - even though you alreafy paid 100 per night - thaths a rip off! the food wasnt even tasty or worth the money and the choice is very poor. FYI there is a small store just about 10mins walk away where you can buy snacks & drinks for half of the price they charge you at the hotel.

We stayed 3 nights at Secreto Hostel Isla Grande. Our overall experience: average hostel with terrible management. A few highlights: The rooms are old, especially the bathrooms where mirrors are “broken/not functional”. The reception works until 4 p.m.. If you have a problem after that time, no one really cares. We had to insist and wait for over one hour until a staff member, which was partying at the beach helped us in the evening. In addition, the hostel does not make any effort to organise tours (snorkling, yoga, mangrove and plankton). They always try to find excuses (broken boat / no guide / teacher got sick) why these activities are not offered. Another issue was that there was no water in the room and neither in the whole hostel the fist two morning (until 12pm). The biggest problem however was the loud music at the bar and the parties at the beach organised by the staff. We could not sleep until 2 a.m! The rosario islands are supposed to be a protected area (national park) which is definitely not respected by this hostel. If you would like to explore the island and the natural treasure in tranquillity and in a sustainable way then better look for another option.

Most incredible hotel on the islands

Reviewed By 380laurav

Probably the most amazing getaway we've ever been on. This hotel is spectacular- it is on an island with the most beautiful water surrounding it. The staff is delightful- from the moment we arrived, they were attentive to our every need and desire. I mentioned it was my partner's 30th birthday and Carlos, who was managing the hotel during our stay, surprised us with a beautiful setup on the beach- our own dinner table all lit up, even with the number 30 on the sand in lights. They allowed us to check in early and to even choose our room. The food was amazing, the massage was incredible, the excursions were fantastic. We went to the enchanted lagoon at dusk to snorkel with the bioluminescent phytoplankton. We also walked around the island with our amazing masseuse. We took another excursion by boat to go snorkeling and visit some of the other beaches. The hotel only has 5 rooms (I think), so it really is like having your own place. Everything is clean and beautiful, the bathrooms even smelled amazing. The wifi is great despite being on an island. Truly a wonderful stay. We are so appreciative of the hospitality and so look forward to returning. Run, don't walk to book!

Our Hamaquero is a hostel located at the southern end of Isla Grande, in front of the coral reef. Guests can sleep in different room types: double for couples with private bathroom, for friends, triple or family with shared bathroom. Our bathrooms are exterior and fresh. We get energy from solar panels, practice permaculture and waste management, and restore corals on the reef. Our space is created to fully enjoy nature, calm and share in natural ethnic tours. Guests can take part in the activities and excursions offered by the property, such as kayaking through the mangrove lagoons and hike through the dry forest. You can also enjoy at night swimming with the bioluminescence of the plankton in the Encantada lagoon, and of course snorkeling in the coral reef in front of the hotel. For this, we offer free equipment so that they can freely enter the coral reef, complying with the safety regulations in the water. The guides also offer you snorkeling points further afield on the north side of the island, where you can appreciate the barrier reef. We accept card with 5% surcharge

Would recommend staying here, but a couple of minor changes would make it perfect!

We stayed here for a couple of days in a private bungalow, which is a quirky hut with a straw roof. The room itself was a perfect size, had a comfortable bed and a toilet and shower area. There is no running water so buckets of fresh and salt water are provided for showering and flushing the loo. This is fine, but it makes it a bit difficult to brush your teeth or wash your face etc as you don’t have enough hands to use the bucket at the same time. At the other side of the garden there is a separate toilet, outside of which is a sink with a bucket of water with a tap at the bottom; this would be perfect in the rooms and would make it much easier. Our only other suggestion would be mosquito nets above the beds. There are nets over the windows, but as they are straw roofed huts there are plenty of holes for mosquitos to enter and we got numerous bites overnight. The owners/staff are super friendly and helpful, and suggested which beaches to go to and where to eat. They also organised our boat transport for us which was great. We love that they are using solar energy while everyone else on the island seems to be using some huge noisy generators. There is a beautiful tiny beach just a few steps away from this place, which is so underrated- we could have spent all of our time there watching the sunsets and the boats go past! We would definitely stay here again!

Eco Hotel Playa Libre

Tranquilidad, comodidad, sencillez

Reviewed By abaltarb

We didn't stay at the hotel. We stopped by for lunch on a private tour of the Rosario Islands. We shared a huge fresh lobster the server pulled right out of a huge cage under the dock. They split it into 2 and then grilled it. We each got a 1/2 lobster and sides. (coco rice and salad) They weighed the lobster and confirmed the market price with us before going ahead. It wasn't cheap but it was delicious. The food was excellent.
