Island of Malta, Malta Food Guide: 8 Southern-Italian food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Valletta

September 13, 2019 Tambra Mccollister

Find out what Southern-Italian restaurants to try in Valletta. Founded in 1565 by the Order of St John as a refuge for soldiers returning from the Crusades, Valletta is now the capital of Malta and a piece of living history. With an unsurpassed collection of original Baroque architecture, fortified city walls overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and the spectacular Co-Cathedral of St John, which features intricately carved stone vaults and a famed painting by Caravaggio, it is no wonder that this smallest of European capital cities is a world heritage site.

Il Teatro Trattoria e Pizzeria

An italian trattoria and Pizzera, serving genuine italian cusinine in the heart of Valletta in Old Theatre street just off St George`s Square. We offer a variety of mouthwatering dishes including in Pizza and Pasta.

There are two parts to this place, the first opens out onto the street, which is where we sat and the second is below street level. Be careful about where you sit as some chairs are placed precariously close to drops and it was clear that one person had moved their chair backwards slightly and fallen causing damage to the surroundings.Service was a bit hit and miss and it seemed that there were a lot of new staff being trained that night. My pizza could have done with slightly more slices of pepperoni and my partner's chicken salad could have done with slightly more chicken and slightly less lettuce. Both were acceptable but could have been improved to make the meal five star.

This is probably the best Italian meal my husband and I have had for a while. We had a seafood risotto and a seafood pasta and both were excellent. They gave us a complimentary starter and bread with the meal and the whole experience was excellent. And the prices were very reasonable which is a bonus!

Domvs Corleone’s was a wonderful find amongst the many restaurants in Valletta. It specialises in Italian food from the Puglia region – simple but absolutely delicious. Giovani, the owner and the chef are both from Puglia and they have a passion for Puglian food. The ingredients are very fresh and the meal sizes are generous - would feed two people. We enjoyed three wonderful evenings at Domvs Corleone’s - Giovani is a great host.It is a small restaurant towards the bottom end of Old Theatre Street (number 67).Menu items that we thoroughly enjoyed were: -Bruschetta del boss farcita-Caprese di bufala - pomodori e mozzarella di bufala-Spaghetti with tomatoes and red pepper-Spaghetti with seafood-Orecchiette with octopusThank you Giovani for your hospitality, whenever we think of Malta we will always remember your wonderful restaurant and the delicious meals that we had there.

The place is great, if can’t find places outside definitely try inside cause interior is very cosy and gives you a great vibe! Try the special platter (can be done for as many people you are although the price is for 2) Staff and food are executed without being too formal or pretentious. Tuna fish stake is great main course but any pasta will excite the pallet, too! Do not leave (no matter how full) without trying the canoli!

Amazing pasta and not only. Everything that I appreciate in a good : good environment and atmosphere, good service, quality on the products served and variety. Ate pasta and a big variety of starters. The quality - price is also very good. They opened a new restaurant now in Marsaxlokk as well ( the best of their restaurants in my opinion).

Great staff, very friendly, happy and helpful - 10 out of 10. That’s where it ends. Pasta with sword fish not too bad, quite flavoursome but only average , definitely not more than a 3 star. Grilled fish platter, well for 30 euros I was expecting something quite special. Tuna slightly over cooked, sword fish definitely over cooked, the 2 large prawns and sea bream were moist and quite tasty, salmon boring. I feel bad because the staff were so lovely but Noooo, I won’t be back and would not recommend, don’t believe everything you read on trip advisor

We were so thankful to go to Salvino's as part of our trip. We ate in a few different places, but none were as good as Salvino's, by far. The keyword here is fresh. They strive to cook only with fresh ingredients and this you can absolutely taste on their meals. For example, even the fried calamari was one of the best we ever had in our lives, which is a dish you can't tweak in too many ways. For the main course, we had the daily special, which was also absolutely delicious. When looking at the service, it was very friendly and easygoing. We really appreciated the more laid-back style, while being fully focused on covering all of our needs. The decoration is the only element which is a bit more simple/classic (nothing extra), but meh, with everything else you get, this is absolutely no problem. Especially since the restaurant is in a prime location already. So don't be one of the many people that got sent away while trying to get a table - reserve a place, come and enjoy :)
