Irkutsk Hostels hotel | Places to Stay in Irkutsk

May 11, 2023 Fernanda Pittenger

Founded in the mid-17th century as a winter quarters for traders and tax collectors, Irkutsk came to prominence in the 1800s. Participants in the Decembrist revolt against Tsar Nicholas I were exiled to Siberia in droves, turning Irkutsk into their cultural center. Today, it’s one of Siberia’s biggest and most important cities, with over half a million people, many universities, many historic churches and museums, and beautiful Lake Baikal, just about an hour away by train.

Ushanka Hostel

Our cozy hostel is located on the second floor of a wooden house in the very heart of Irkutsk, at walking distance to main tourist attractions!

What a perfect spot! We were pleasantly surprised!

Booked here because we found it on the internet. Walking in, the host (whose parents own the hostel) was one of the kindest and most helpful people we met in Russia. We are three americans who don't speak a lick of russian, and can't even read the alphabet, so it was very nice to have her assistance. The shower is AMAZING. Beds are comfortable, kitchen is large enough to cook a full scale meal in, and the living area is great. Oh, fast wifi. Overall, I wish more hostels would follow the lead of this one.

Really good to be a hostal

Reviewed By Juan S

Well, when I saw the pictures in the booking page, I thought it looks really good to be true, but I thought that maybe they set it up to get good pictures, but then when I got to the place it was really good. The service it is great, the bedroom was really clean, the bathroom also was always clean. The living room was good enough to share with other travellers, last but no least the kitchen has everything to cook whatever you want and was always clean. It is perfect to travel to the Baikal lake, because it is just in front of the bus stop, and it is also next to the bus station, and the train station it is just 10 minutes away.

Great help from the staff

Reviewed By Greggo1321

Felt compelled to write a positive review because of how much the staff helped us with getting taxis and arranging transport to far off places after our cars and drivers fell through at the last minute. That was despite a language barrier and needing to pass a phone back and forth with google translate. They really helped out and we appreciated it. As for the room, it was perfectly cozy and had unique decor but did feel a little bit outdated. The location was fine for our purposes and it was a great price overall.

Expected more after reading so many great reviews

Reviewed By DoDoFarouk

There are many good things about this place: location ( short walk to the bus stop to get to lake baikal, every important sight in irkutsk is also close), rooms are clean and comfortable. Negative was the really bad WiFi and the "bathroom- situation" (only two bathrooms/ toilets for approximately 30 people, regularly resulting in waiting periods up to 30 minutes). In other reviews people are very exited about the owner. This may be the reason why our expectations could not be met, because during our stay we only got to see her for 10 minutes. Instead the staff consisted of 2 lovely ladies who tried hard, but mostly couldn't be of any help especially because they didn't speak a single word of English. Lastly it also had to be noticed that there would be a charge for unusual things compared to other hostels ( calling a cab, leaving luggage at the premises for a few hours after checkout)

Hostel Bravo

We will be glad to see you among our guests. Our hostel offers the most convenient arrangement for those who just arrived and in 2 minutes it would like to appear on a soft bed. In too time, considering a close arrangement of the airport to the downtown, from the hostel conveniently to reach all sight of the city. But the main advantage - by our hostel goes the road to Lake Baikal. Can accommodate up to 60 people. Area - 500 sq m Accommodation in rooms from 1 to 4 people. Hostel Bravo is ready to immerse guests in a comfortable environment. This can make a huge space with a large number of individual places to relax and socialize in a pleasant and interesting musically decorated interior. Not accidentally chose the name of the hostel. The entire interior is devoted to a musical theme. So it is not surprising to see or hold a real violin or put vinyl disc on the rarity "Stardust." It offers free use available: • 6 showers, 6 toilets • Free WiFi throughout the hostel •Recreation room with a large TV, divided into several zones • Dining room • Equipped kitchen •Washing machine and Ironing Board with iron Comforts and attentive staff • Luggage storage • A pleasant and convenient white bed linen and towel •video Surveillance in public areas

Excellent location for very late arrival or very early morning flight.

Excellent location for overnight stay if you arrival late at night or early morning flight. Good wifi and reception staff is helpful but speak very little english. Near airport bus station which many buses can take you to town center easily in 30 min. for mere 20 RUB. Good supply of foods and drinks with reasonably prices and big canteen area. Will defineitely stay here again.

Baikaler Hostel

Jack Sheremetoff, a Lonely Planet recommended guide, welcomes you to stay in his Baikaler Hostel (he'd rather call it a '3 guest room apartment') in the epicenter of Irkutsk (corner of Lenin and Karl Marks streets). The location of the hostel is unbeatably central and ultimately convenient. You can walk everywhere you need within minutes: ATMs, pizza or restaurant, Art Museum, river walking area.

Horrible service and overpriced

Reviewed By tuinkaboutertjes

Got picked up with minibus that would bring us to Olkhon. Paid 2000 rubles, got driven around through Irkutsk for half an hour to get kicked out at almost the same place in the lashing rain. Were told another couple reserved the spots we got and they blatantly told us we could 'just' walk two kilometres through the rain to the bus station. No alternative was offered to us even though they were the ones that made a mistake. In the bus station the transport only costs 1200 rubles for two persons and you get way better service.

Best hostel during trans siberian trip across Russia

Reviewed By jspatrone

This was by far and large the best hostel we stayed at during our trans siberian trip across Russia. Staff were fluent in English and very helpful in organizing trips do the Baykal lake (our guide also organized tours for Baikaler, the most popular option to stay in Irkutsk). They also pointed out the most relevant sights around Irkutsk and helped us find the Mongolian consulate to sort out the visa for onwards travel. The private double room was in fact a twin, but clean and comfortable. Shared toilet and shower, but also clean. Great option for backpacking couples.
