The oldest university in the world isn’t Oxford or the Sorbonne—it’s the University of Al-Karaouine, and you’ll find it in Fes el Bali. This walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will transport you back to medieval times. Visit the ancient maze-like quarters of the Medina to Fes el-Bali and the four imposing Gates of Fes, with their distinctive Moroccan tile work. You can walk, or, if you're brave, take a taxi—the daredevil drivers will have you hanging on for dear life.

Wonderful people, beautiful place

Reviewed By jennifereott

Our family of 4 spent 5 nights at this Riad in the Fes Medina, and we’re treated so well. The staff attended to our every need, arranging help getting us and our luggage through the mazes, preparing wonderful meals and massages on-site, connecting us with a tour guide for the day trip to Volubilis (worth the trip!) and attending to our younger daughter when she wasn’t feeling great. Yasmín, Azuz, and the while staff were terrific. We could not recommend this place more highly! It’s away from the frenzy of the markets, but easily accessible to everything you might need in the Medina.

An oasis in the heart of the Medina of Fes

Reviewed By MarSo68

We stepped in the Riad Laaroussa and I instantly felt so happy we had chosen it! It is a calm oasis in the heart of the very busy Medina. The courtyard is truly beautiful, the swimming pool nice and the breakfast very very tasty. We loved our room which was spacious with a wonderful bathroom. The only reason I gave a 4* is because we did not like at all the Moroccan dinner - three warm salads very average, a tajine with peas and some meat (an overwhelming amount of peas that covered all tastes) and a dessert which I now do not remember. I am sure that this can be fixed easily by the owners and the cook.

The immaculate rooms are very spacious and well designed. the air conditioner was both strong and quiet for a good nights sleep in those amazing sheets. The breakfast was beyond plentiful and a fresh mix of salty, sweet, Moroccan and continental finds. We had dinner there every night and loved the Moroccan options with all the home made accompaniments. Kudos to the chef! The true gem is the the Karawan was the amazing hospitality and attention that all staff showed us. We looked forward to our nightly exchanges with sweet & well spoken Mohammed. We will miss them! Best fes experience

Reviewed By deeeex

The stay at Mazar completely elevated our experience at fes. Pictures don’t do it justice! It feels like home here. Siham and team work like a family and they love what they do. They don’t work off commission and just want us to have the best experience in fes. Lots of great recommendation for food, guides, shopping and anything you need! We went to many top rated local restaurants but to our surprise, the meal at riad Mazar is by farrrr the best in taste, variety and authenticity. They don’t run a restaurant and only cook for guests upon request. A must have experience if you do decide to stay here!

Moroccan hospitality at its finest

Reviewed By J T

My sister and I stayed at Riad Alya for two nights as part of our Tour of Morocco and from the moment we confirmed the booking the service and attention has truly been exceptional. We were contacted well in advance to confirm details, requirements, transfer requests, tips on local attractions etc and once we arrived, one of the employees - Hussein - was on hand to greet us with a big smile, mint tea and cakes and further suggestions on how to make the most of our time. The Riad is very conveniently located right next to a major pick up point for tours, taxis, buses etc whilst still being in close proximity to the Blue Gate. Rooms are rustic but very spacious and comfortable and the view from the roof terrace is truly spectacular. For us, Hussein is the star of the show - attentive, friendly and always looking to ensure we had a great time. On the first day we had to leave for a tour hours before breakfast started but he brought breakfast forward just for us. He then recommended the best way to traverse the Medina without getting lost. On the second day we had to check out early to catch a train and he sent us off with packaged breakfasts so we didn't have to go without. We later discovered that he woke up early (even though his shift didn't start until the evening) on both days just to do this for us. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and our conversations about Moroccan life with Hussein and would not hesitate to recommend Riad Alya to all our friends .
