A wonderful relaxing stay in a elegant, perfectly located hotel

The Old Ground is one of our favorite hotels in Ireland. Perfectly located toward the center of Ennis, an adorable town in County Clare. The hotel is charming - with an inviting lobby, wonderful live music in the Poet's corner and delicious food in the Town Hall. The "full Irish" breakfast in the breakfast dining room is not to be missed! Staff are warm and helpful. Rooms have been renovated and are nicely appointed, with wonderful bedding and mattresses. We'll be back!

The hotel is a short drive outside Ennis but a car is a must if visiting this hotel. It was very quiet during our stay except for the children running around who appear to be staying longer term. We had lunch in the bar which was ok, we opted to go into town for dinner. Breakfast was ok, a buffet selection but again kids running around and families who were hoarding plates of food to bring to their rooms not leaving much selection for others. No one at the reception desk when we were checking out so we just left. Happy enough to stay again for a single night trip but didn’t have the comfort for me if staying a few nights. Carpets are all very dusty in the rooms and corridors and could do with a deep clean. Room was a good size for a family.

Not a nice place for a family break.

Went here for a family break away. First off walking to the rooms the hallways smells of cat urine, plug sockets & skirting boards hanging off the wall, the room itself was absolutely filthy could badly do with a deep clean. Downstairs in the “restaurant” was just bar food, ordering the food was a a job and food not that good. Hotel overall appears very run down and could do with updating. Definitely would not recommend. An interesting experience

Reviewed By sidstone

We were phoned on the morning of our one night stay to be advised that the hotel had overbooked and were we still coming as they had booked? When we said we were and that they had already taken payment, they said that would be fine. Not an auspicious start. We arrived at around 4 into the large car park outside and rang the bell. Nobody appeared. We rang again and waited for another 10 minutes. Still nothing. We wandered around the place but finding no-one, decided to explore Ennis and try later. We then phoned and were told what the pass codes were and that he would leave the door of our room open and the key on the bed. Thus we checked in without seeing anyone! Ennis is several miles away and the walk is not particularly pleasant. Therefore if you want to pop into town, a car or a taxi is advisable. The room was in the new part of the hotel and there were no carpets in the corridor and lots of signs of ongoing building work. The room itself was absolutely enormous with two big double beds and what looked like half a fitted kitchen against the wall. Patio doors opened up to a huge outdoor space with decking and a river at the bottom. Beds were clean and comfortable and the bathroom was very nice. However the TV didn't work, the internet was useless and when we complained the guy told us that they hadn't finished everything and we could only get Netflix at the moment. That didn't work either so we gave up, sat outside, watched the river and then slept in our enormous beds. Patio doors are good when you are awake but there were no other windows, so when you go to bed, you either leave these doors open or sleep in a fully enclosed environment. Not ideal. Our room cost £135 and that seemed plenty without breakfast. As there was also so little engagement, I don't think I would choose to stay again as it felt more like an AirBnB than a guesthouse and I like places to be a bit more welcoming. But if you want a massive room, kitchen facilities and a big garden to run around, this place would be perfect.

The exterior was shabby and this set the tone for the interior. Upon arrival there was a musty smell. The girls in reception were very pleasant and friendly, I have no doubt but they were following procedure in having me pay for my accomodation BEFORE having to sign a disclaimer with regard to noise from hotel night club. Stayed in Room 117, the room was shabby with old furniture, lighting was non-existent only light was a bad light fixture on the wall, a night light would give as much light, NO TABLE LAMP. Room was across from stairs and lift, next to reception and fire door leading to more bedrooms and the night club hence nothing but noise until after 2 a.m Floor boards creaked with movement in rooms above and alongside bedroom. The bathroom was absolutely vile and the bed very uncomfortable, the bed lined was crisp and clean. Parked in Abbey Street car park as per instruction from hotel BUT they conveniently omitted to tell me that parking would cost one euro per hour. When you factored in this cost on top of the 149 euro it is very expensive, for a 3* hotel the only positive thing is its location. I had stayed the previous two nights in Loughrea in a 4.5* hotel for 99 euro per night for B&B.
