Lovely, friendly staff who provide great service. Good portions. Good value. The fish is outstanding, very tasty, and with a lovely light, crisp batter (try the cod). Seriously good, and the best in town by a long shot. Chips are real, cut (and untreated) on the premises, (unlike those used by local competitors). OK, sometimes my personal taste is for a slightly more crispy/browned chip, but (especially using new potatoes and cooking in very clean cooking oil/fat) these are still good, and they are cooked through in any case! We visit every week, and the standard never drops! Well done, and thank you!

It would be unreasonable to expect Mayfair levels of service and stock availability on a bank holiday weekend in Southwold (some reviewers may need to adjust their expectations), but on the night we were there, we would have been hard pressed to find a better meal outside of the Smoke. Similar places might talk a big game and fail to deliver, relying on fancy plates and ambition, but the Boardwalk is up to it.Starters are good (on point mackerel pate with spiky pickles; crispy greaseless whitebait; proper hummus for the member of our party who forgot which country we were in). Main courses improve. Southwold isn't short of good fish and chips but the Boardwalk plays a belter with the batter, and features mushy peas which are actually mashed peas. Fish pie was smooth and stodgy and comforting, and the smoked chicken salad was light, interesting and not overwrought. The service we found excellent. A small mix-up with the number of covers our party needed was swiftly resolved. Mrs H asked her usual "what can you provide for a vegan" question with trepidation, and was rewarded with an inspired starter of tempura broccoli and noodles, and a squash curry with a depth that beats any that I've tried for a long time. Pricing is as to be expected for a restaurant in this kind of location, but the quality makes a visit well worthwhile. A visit to the Pier View Bar both before dinner (a prosecco cocktail) and afterwards (the Toblerone - try it) is also mandatory. A very pleasing evening.Dear Chris H,Thank you for your review and understanding. As I am sure you saw, the pier was exceptionally busy over the bank holiday weekend.I was really pleased to read that you enjoyed your meal and that your wife, as a vegan, found choice on the menu. We have recently changed this menu to include more options for vegetarians and vegans so I am pleased that this has proven to be a success.Do come back and see us again soon - Pier View has a lot a different cocktails for you to work your way through.Kind regards,Southwold Pier

We had a great late lunch here. Yes, we had booked. Our food was lovely, the staff were friendly, efficient and considerate. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting and the restaurant has plenty of charm, rustic and informal. My only small bugbear is that customers could bring in dogs. I'm a dog lover but not a fan of other people's while eating my lunch.

A lovely evening. We both had fish and it was cooked perfectly, complimented by an interesting wine and attentive service. The dining room itself is very, very old and atmospheric, and altogether made for a special night out. I’m used to London prices, and this meal seemed very reasonable by comparison, but also compared with another Southwold restaurant we went to the night before where the meal was much less flavoursome and the service incredibly slow.So glad to see you had a lovely evening with us. Thank you so much for taking the time to post us such a lovely review, we hope to see you back here again soon
