Mikeno Lodge

Mikeno Lodge is a 90 minute drive from Goma and offers beautifully appointed bungalows and fine dining. The lodge, restaurant, and bar are all located within a forest and offer beautiful views of the rift valley and Nyiragongo and Mikeno volcanoes. Nature walks and visits to local places of interest can be arranged. There is an abundance of bird life, as well as resident blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and baboons. Chimpanzees are also frequent visitors to the area. The Senkwekwe Center for orphan mountain gorillas is just a 10 minute walk from the lodge and can be visited daily.

This will be one of the best experiences of your life

We recently returned from our second trip to Virunga National Park and Mikeno Lodge. This park holds a special place in our hearts. Not only because of the landscape and the wildlife, but because of the people. The dedication of everyone connected to the park (rangers, trackers, tourism staff, lodge staff, etc) is unbelievable. They all stand whole-heartedly on the frontline of conservation, and it is demonstrated everyday in their professionalism and level of service. The lodge has incredibly gorgeous views, with blue and colobus monkeys cavorting overhead. The cottages themselves are wonderful and you will welcome the warmth from the fireplace in the evening (already lit when you return from dinner). Speaking of dinner, we are vegans and Mikeno’s new Chef, Lita (pronounced Leet), did a wonderful job of accommodating us. What’s extra-special about staying at Mikeno is that, in addition to the gorilla trekking, you can spend time visiting the Senkwekwe Gorilla Sanctuary (read more about its history and purpose on the park’s website), as well as the Widow’s Workshop. Be sure to leave some extra space in your suitcase to bring home some of the absolutely spectacular textile creations made in the workshop. The quality is excellent and the designs are gorgeous. If you have time to visit the Congohounds unit, that is also worthwhile. It’s worth booking an extra day to take all this in, as you may not have time left in the day after a gorilla trek. Getting a glimpse of the day-to-day activities of the Park’s Headquarters (where Mikeno Lodge is located) is also interesting, and the resident baboons provide entertainment as well. Virunga Park is about more than gorillas and your trip will be greatly enriched if you spend some time beforehand reading about the myriad of sustainability projects being undertaken by the Virunga Alliance to create an alternative economy that allows surrounding communities to benefit from the national park. As for the gorilla treks: what can we say beyond the fact that this is our second time to DRC to do this, and for our most recent visit we booked 3 treks. It is one of the most amazing and humbling experiences ever, to be allowed an hour to sit with a gorilla family in their world, on their own terms, wild and free. The only reason why this is possible is because of the trust, respect and personal relationships painstakingly built-up over the years between the gorillas and the rangers and trackers. It gives one hope for the future. Virunga Park staff take security incredibly seriously and we felt completely safe every day, on both of our visits. We booked direct through the park website (visitvirunga) and their online booking staff took care of every detail. This is hands-down the best place to trek gorillas. Your tourist dollars in DRC make a difference. Don’t hesitate, just go.

The place was welcoming dispute the fact that we arrived late and it was clean. The power had failed when we arrived and there was no backup power and the place was just a bit tatty and details missed. e.g. no toilet paper. The price was over $100 and I expected better.

VIP Palace 2

Good for Goma

Reviewed By ejchowder

Recently I had the opportunity to stay at the VIP Palace 2 here in Goma. It's conveniently located next to La Grande Barriere taking you to Rwanda and it is next to Ihusi, one of the more popular hotels in the area. Many of the local restaurants (mostly Indian) are within walking distance to the hotel. As with all meal services, the food you order for lunch or dinner takes a while to make (about 40 min). You can pay your meals with credit card (visa/mastercard) if you are trying to save your cash. Running water and electricity are not an issue generally. The beds are equipped with mosquito nets and you have running hot water although this varies from room to room. They have a pool here as well but on weekends, there are a lot of people there. They do have wifi but make sure to ask the front desk for the password. Check out time is at 11AM. If you check out after that, even if it is 1101 they will charge you and will be unable to make any changes so make sure you communicate with them if you need a later check out time. You get 1 bottle of water in the room every day you request the room to be cleaned. There is no safe in the room, so be sure to lock up everything in your suitcase. People have had their jewelry stolen here. They have a fridge but the drinks in there are over priced. Better to go to some of the local marts and bring drinks back. If you want your room cleaned, you have to leave the key at the front desk at the beginning of the day.

Caritas Lodge

Not a hotel

Reviewed By Jahshoeuh

I am an event coordinator for an international NGO. We had a 60-person event at Caritas for participants from throughout Africa. When I arrived at night, the staffperson working there didn't have a record of my arrival (despite the fact that I was the primary person responsible for organizing the event and that I had sent them a rooming list weeks earlier). That was eventually straightened out, but when the participants arrived the next day, they ran out of rooms by the time our Nigerian delegation arrived. I had to take them to another property around midnight...not the best time to be cruising around the streets of Kinshasa, taking out hundreds of dollars from ATMs (to pay for their accommodation at the other place). The place itself looks like a prison. WiFi connectivity.

Hotel Festina Lente

A hotel for the fearless!

Reviewed By Frankgeo

The hotel is not unattractive from the outside and at $90 per night for a single bedroom reasonably priced for Lubumbashi. The shock sets in when stepping into the hotel - completely incompetent receptionists. When asked to sort out the aircon, the TV and to provide a piece of soap at least the TV was set up on the 2 channels it could receive. The soap had to be tracked down from the night staff at 2 a.m. - The room, very clean, good bed but rickety furniture, small mobile aircon blowing hot air only, wall clock dysfunctional, bar fridge working but not cooling, makeshift pedestals for the fridge and the aircon, electrical cables hanging everywhere. The rooms basically show neglect and lack of experienced management. Free and guarded parking in the yard. The view from the room is highly unattractive but that is not necessarily their fault. - I did not have breakfast there although it is included in the rate. The hotel is definitely not worth the price it commands. For a bit more money there are much nicer places in Lubumbashi.
