Writers and poets have long flourished in arts-oriented Cuenca, the country's third-largest city and the capital of the Azuay province. Cafes and galleries are tucked among the narrow cobblestone streets. The main plaza hosts both the old cathedral, started in 1557, the year the city was founded, and the blue-domed Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, dating to 1885. Locally made Panama hats get top billing at the markets, with centrally located Casa de la Mujer a shopping standout.

Pros: - Excellent service at reception (best care and support for changing a hotel booking in another hotel) - Good breakfast choice and quality (sensational omelette) - Very quiet with all guest rooms towards the river side Cons: - “bottleneck” in the toilet (even for a 5 star hotel) - Gym was already closed on Sunday early afternoon (also very poor equipment)

The rear garden is wonderful, quiet and with beautiful corners to rest and enjoy the abundant vegetation. The hotel staff was extraordinarily friendly and at all times willing to respond to our requests, which made our stay in Cuenca especially pleasant.

Santa Lucia House - Forum

Our hotel is located in a recently restored heritage building in the historic center of Cuenca. We offer 12 elegant guest rooms that invite you to enjoy your stay in Cuenca in a traditional environment at the most comfortable level. Each room has a private bath with modern installations. The Forum Hotel charm comes from the conservation of the original elements of the building. Those elements are mainly the two courtyards, adobe walls, wooden balconies and wrought iron elements, and traditional tiling. A classic living room with hand painted ceiling round up the picture, which recalls the old times. The guest rooms are more modern, inviting our guests to feel at home. Committed to preserving the environment, we use LED technology lighting, which significantly reduces our energy consumption.

Beautiful colonial hotel located in the center of Cuenca. Just two street blocks from the central park, it has twenty exquisite decorated rooms. Each room is different from each other and they have all the comfort of a modern style room. Inside the hotel there are two restaurants considered two of the best restaurants of the city. The first one is named Bacus Caf., and it serves a modern Ecuadorian cuisine Nouve style. The second one is a Trattoria named Novecento. It is considered the best Trattoria of the whole country.

Lovely stay at the Hotel Boutique Santa Lucia

Reviewed By Cindy O

My boyfriend and I stayed a weekend in Cuenca in the Hotel Boutique Santa Lucia in early May 2022. We are in our late 30s and we aren't the hostel types. We aren't fussy, but we like our creature comforts. This hotel was much more than we expected. The photos you will see online really don't do it justice. Everything was exceptionally clean. The rooms aren't as small as many of the reviews describe. The beds were clean and comfortable, and the hotel itself is very beautiful. There's lovely seating all over the hotel and the staff is very helpful. The location is also perfect, everything is about 2 blocks away so it makes walking to everything very easy. It is located right in the heart of the old town so you won't have any problems getting anywhere. We never once felt unsafe and had a lovely time hopping around the various restaurants and bars that are in the area. We had breakfast on site every day, which was perfect. They have menu options to order but they can accommodate your request for changes on the menu if you'd like. Options include a traditional bacon and eggs, eggs benedict, omelette - the usual stuff. It's all great. You won't be disappointed. If you are, you're spoiled. Comes with coffee/tea, and a juice, plus a lovely setting of bread and fresh made jam. The bar unfortunately was not really operational and I wouldn't count on it. The bar menu looked fantastic and the location is very trendy, but they weren't really open and we only got served one night - though the drink was great! We didn't get a chance to eat at the restaurant on site, though they had a lovely setup every night for it. It's likely very good. Be aware that the hotel doesn't have any elevators. There are only three floors and we were on the third - it really wasn't that bad to climb but you'll want to be aware of that if you have any issues going up stairs. Suggest getting a room on the second floor if you do, rather than the first. There's many reviews noting the noise in the hotel, it really wasn't an issue. Yes in the morning, you can hear people talking, and perhaps on the first floor if you are near the restaurant you can hear the noise as the location is an old colonial building so things echo. On the third floor, we only heard voices in the morning when people were leaving the hotel and it really wasn't all that disruptive. The TV in the room was louder, and it can be drowned out. Again, not an issue. For those worried about air conditioning - the hotel doesn't need it. Nights are cold in Cuenca and you're not in the room during the day anyway, and even when we came to the room, when we opened the windows we were fine. Overall, I highly recommend this hotel. If I return to Cuenca, I will stay here again. Tip: Don't take the airport transfer offered by the hotel. They charge $14 USD, and when our transfer didn't arrive, we ended up taking a cab back to the hotel and it cost us $1.50 USD. Definitely take a taxi, though the driver they provide is very nice.

Simple

Reviewed By DustyTravels90

I stayed here for several nights while visiting Cuenca. The hotel was modern, clean, and simple. The double bed room was spacious with a large bathroom. The best part about this hotel in my opinion is the location. You can walk any direction and discover so many places around the area! I gave 4 stars because the breakfast service was very slow. The food was delicious, but the service was slow, scarce menu choices, and utterly overpriced for anyone that wasn't a guest. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that you are charged an additional $25.00 per night if another guest stays overnight with you or if you have another guest with you when you check-in (even if you booked a room with two beds). I am a solo traveler, but I booked a double bed room, so that my friend could join me in the city without paying since I had already pre-paid for the room. With that mindset, I was surprised to find that I still had to pay more just for allowing my friend to stay with me. However, the front desk explained to me that you must indicate the number of people that will be in the room when making your reservation online. The price is significantly higher for two people sharing a room even though the room has two beds. I have never experienced this type of policy before. So, keep that in mind when booking on their website. :-) Aside from those things everything else was good and I would stay here again.

A Gem with Excellent Service

I absolutely loved my stay at this beautiful hotel located near the San Sebastian neighborhood. Quaint and charming in a wonderfully restored mansion converted to what is essentially a bed and breakfast. I stayed 6 nights and then another night on my return to Cuenca. Both rooms were clean, comfortable, with quality mattresses, good pillows, plenty of hot water and thick, sumptuous towels. Breakfast was fruit, eggs, roll, cheese, juice, coffee and yoghurt with muesili with variations each day. Maria was amazing and went out of her way to ensure i had a good stay, as did the remaining staff. I have nothing but good things to say about my stay here.
