Comillas Food Guide: 10 Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Comillas

February 26, 2018 Lashaunda Abraham

Comillas is a small township and municipality in the northern reaches of Spain, in the autonomous community of Cantabria. The Marquisate of Comillas, a fiefdom of Spanish nobility, holds ceremonial office in the seat of power at a small castle which overlooks the town. The Comillas Pontifical University was housed here before it moved to Madrid, and the old university buildings are among the finest examples of architecture in the town. Besides this, there are many notable medieval and baroque buildings.

Filipinas had the feel of a classic neighborhood spot with good, unpretentious food (but not so special as to make it a tourist restaurant), high QPR and a comfortable, unfussy setting. We went for lunch and there was a nice mix of workmen, business people and couples, both old and young. The staff was working hard to cover the rush but still managed to deliver solid friendly service and didn't make us feel like the outsiders that we were. I'm not sure I would recommend this as a destination restaurant but we really liked it and would probably eat here once every week or two if we lived nearby.

All 4 of us agreed, this was not only the best restaurant on our northern Spain trip, but also actually in our lives...beating out NYC, Boston, and SF eateries. Our group shared each plate--8 in all, for less than 30 euro per person--what a steal! We had two house special fish dishes, an amazing prawn salad, a 10 cheese variety plate, chorizo in cider, the best tiramisu and chocolate mousse, coffee, wine, water, complimentary soup taster, rolls, and post-meal alcohol chasers... plus everything was beautifully plated and the Waitstaff were really kind and eager to help us understand despite limited language abilities. Get the specials...the chef knows what s/he is doing!,

We had a simple lunch, at this casual and neat little bar, where the server/owner was exceptionally friendly, funny and very welcoming. He made us feel at home. We enjoyed the very good local food, mostly comfort food and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. I ordered a regular salad, or salad normal, their local dish Cocido Dontanes - a rich hearty beef stew served in a huge pot placed on the table....wow, and Pinentos Rellenos which I think were stuffed with minced beef and bacon, tomato sauce and wine, Carne Ciseros - home made meat type of canelloni, delicious! The wine (a Rioja) was excellent. It was a neat and very enjoyable spot in Comillas, would recommend.

In the traditional fishing port of Comillas - Cantabria is located our charming restaurant with stunning views over the Bay of Biscay, where we make a careful personal attention as we understand love of food. We offer the best fish and seafood arrived daily at our port.

We found this restaurant by chance and really enjoyed our meal - arroz con bogavante (rice with lobster). it was a windy day so we sat inside but the view was still great. This was the best restaurant we found in Comillas - others were very touristy and pricey. Our bill came to 67.20 Euros (for the paella, wine, desert and coffee) and it was worth it. There were other cheaper fish options on the menu but we wanted to try this dish whilst we were in the area (it's a speciality) and were very pleased we did.

Donde Diony is on Paseo Solatorre, a short walk from the town center, or on your way to the town center if you're staying at Hotel Solatorre, or another of the lodgings up the hill from the center of town / the beach. The outside of the restaurant is non-descript and unassuming, and it is rather small; thus it seems not to be catering to tourists, which is why it's a great place for the mid-day meal. Unlike the tourist restaurant in town that we tried, there were no hidden charges--a "complete meal" was just that. We got a first course--salad or a similar dish, a main course, desert, bread, water and wine for the advertised price. The selections were quite sufficient. Also, unlike the restaurant in the town center, the food was very fresh, well prepared, and the servings were generous. The food was typical Spanish, which I love. It was not "nouveau" or trendy in any way. I noticed both times that we appeared to be the only tourists there. Everyone else seemed to be locals, and regulars, on their dinner break--a good sign, I think. The two times we ate the mid-day meal there, I had delicious fresh fish and seafood. If you go around 1:00 or 2:00 during the summer, you may have to wait a little while for a table. We waited about 10 or 15 minutes. My friend, from Asturias, Spain, is in her 70's, an excellent cook, and very picky about food, and even she really liked the food and couldn't find any fault with it. Donde Diony is clean and comfortable, but not fancy. If what you want is fresh, well prepared Spanish food with generous servings at a fair price, I highly recommend it over the "tourist traps" in the town center.

This was the second time we have visited this restaurant this year. As the previous time, we were very satisfied. The service is right, all the waiters are quite kind. Food is homemade and with specialities from the region. We recommend, in particular, Rabas, cabrito and albóndigas (this plate is the star of the house!). Prices are fair enough. Atmosphere represents a sales house of the last century, in a village of the last century.

We arrived and were greeted warmly in both Spanish and English. Menus were available in English if required. We ordered the ternera a la brasa, which is steak cooked on a charcoal heated cast iron hot plate at your table. There were just the two of us so the waitress kindly offered to just bring a half portion (a full portion is a kilo of steak!). It was served with home cooked chips and a portion of padron peppers. You seared the steak yourself so you could choose how well-done you wanted it. Perfect! There was even a free starter of pudding de la Casa, which is a fish mousse served with little toasts. The wine was great (we had their cheapest Ribera del Duero) and the service was friendly. Highly recommended.

Sat on light chairs on a cobbled sloping street with a sloping table outside this bar restuarant, brilliant, not for the comfort or the sights but simply for the food. The Menu del la day is €15 with a great choice, the casa vino tinto is light and not special but what can you expect, before that order some Calamari, and enjoy fresh lightly coated brilliance. This is the Spain I go to find, very friendly service, freshly prepared food and completely unprepossessing. Don't wear your best clothes and make sure you can be warm enough. This took me back to 15 years ago. Great value great food great fun.

This restaurant is a little out of the way but the location and ambiance is amazing and worth the visit despite the really bad service. We were a group of 4 adults and 4 kids and luckily we had some snacks before arriving because after being seated it took them nearly 30minutes just to give us the menus. The slow start was clearly an indication of the slow service that we were about to receive. Although the food was not bad, by the time it arrived at our table it was completely cold. Service was so slow that in the end we let the kids get up to play and then 30min later we called them back for their main courses. Such a disappointment. I got the feeling that they are not used to having more than 2 tables to serve.
