We arrived almost half an hour early after our matinee visit to Chichester Festival Theatre, but the staff weren't phased at all. We received a very warm welcome and were shown straight to our table. Complimentary canapes arrived whilst we perused the menu, (a chilled tomato and basil 'froth', fried smoked haddock and parmesan crisps) all delicious. We were spoilt for choice with the starters, with one of us opting for the textured beetroot and goats cheese, and the other for the sauteed mushrooms with poached duck egg, though we were also tempted by the potato basket of Selsey Crab. They did not disappoin!
We both had the lamb to follow: Loin of lamb, slow cooked belly, aubergine purée, red pepper, shallots, wild garlic oil, parmentier potatoes, lamb jus, which was delicious, with the loin perfectly pink. We had a bottle of excellent Argentian Malbec, and finished with excellent coffee with home made petit fours. Wish we could go every week!

The restaurant successfully combines excellent service and presentation, stylish décor and friendly ambience with food of the highest quality. Where possible, the menu is sourced from local producers – Selsey fishermen and neighbouring dairy farmers. With an adventurous emphasis on fresh fish and of course crab and lobster! There are also traditional English and Mediterranean dishes to tempt the taste buds and thrill the palate. The fabulous wine list has delightfully wordy descriptions, with 17 classics by the glass to help you choose – some you will know and many you’ve yet to discover. If you wish to dine alfresco the Terrace and the beer garden have beautiful views of the countryside.

We stayed two nights in miserable January and were made very welcome by the lovely receptionist, Christine. We had a cosy but contemporary room overlooking the fields and slept very well.
We had one a la carte dinner in the smart dining room from an imaginative menu, which was delicious and nicely presented.
The second night we had a very tasty pub meal in the bar that was enjoyable and relaxing.
The full breakfast, included in our room rate, was the star of the show. Excellent range of cooked breakfast entrees and lovely juices, fruit, yoghurt and granola. Our breakfasts were cooked to order on both days making for a leisurely start to the day (the hotel was very quiet in early January). It was really nice to have freshly cooked food rather than a hot dish selection.
We will definitely stay here again.

I have eaten at this Restaurant many times since it first opened and was always impressed by its innovative dishes and focus on locally sourced ingredients. However the last couple of visits have been disappointing.
My main criticisms are as follows;
1) Menu is tired with the same dishes featuring every time: brisket, steak, bavette.
2) Inconsistency with presentation. Some dishes feature just the meat and a little garnish, others come with a full helping potatoes, veg, etc
3) I had a poor fish dish which consisted of a lump of bony, rather tasteless fish. When i mentioned this to the waitress she did take it back to have the bones removed but I do feel that if one orders fish in a restaurant it should come with the bones removed. A piece of steamed bony fish without much in the way of any garnish was a great disappointment considering it cost £20.
4) Desserts. Too much emphasis on jokey quirkiness (Mr Whippy) rather than focusing of flavour and quality of ingredients.
5) Service. There used to be a charming waitress who greeted everyone as if they were one of the family. The waitress when I last visited was somewhat frosty, especially after I complained about the fish.
I was really pleased when the Richmond Arms first appeared in the Good Food Guide but feel now that it has fallen below the threshold for a fine dining restaurant.
The chef needs to get back to basics. Focus on locally sourced quality ingredients cooked simply. Refresh the menu. Revise the desserts. Wit and irony are for comedians not chefs.

The George

The George has been a public house for over 170 years and is first shown on the Tithe Map from 1840. Nestled into the rolling hills of the Sussex South Downs National Park The George is just off the beaten track in the small village of Eartham, perfectly situated just 6 miles from the bustling city of Chichester and within 10 miles of Petworth, Midhurst and Arundel. A traditional English pub, it provides a comfortable and welcoming place to visit whatever the season. There are three open fires for those cool autumn and winter evenings and a pretty garden to sit out in on bright summer days. There is a selection of good walks and cycle routes in this area including Eartham woods, The South Downs Way and a particularly interesting section of Stane Street (56 mile long Roman Road connecting Chichester to London) located an easy 1/2 mile walk from the pub. The George is a privately owned Freehouse and your hosts Anita & James offer a warm welcome to all. We are proud to offer good honest British food with a seasonal menu taking advantage of locally sourced ingredients plus a selection of traditional roasts for your Sunday Lunch. Whether you want a full meal or only a light bite, your food is freshly prepared to order. In our well kept cellar we include a wide selection of English, Commonwealth & New World wines, English Mead and soft drinks. There are always 4 or 5 choices of Real Ales sourced from local and national quality Breweries. We also have a wide range of English Lagers, Ciders and bottled Beers.

We had a lovely meal on the 10th March. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable particularly the guy serving the real ale (we had a nice conversation on the various properties of the ale on sale!). Attentive staff (without being too attentive!) and all with a smile. Nice atmosphere with good food and reasonably priced. We do come about annually but probably time to become more frequent visitors

Really nice restaurant tucked away in a side street in the old town with a bar area, and tables discreetly set out in various parts of the building. Staff were very polite, courteous and efficient. The menu choice was very good with both an al a carte and market (set price) menus, offering seasonal food cooked perfectly, along with a good selection of wines. This was our first visit and the restaurant is firmly on our approved restaurant list for future visits!
