This hotel seems to feature on Tripadvisor as a restaurant but it actually is quite a large hotel with rooms on several floors. I stayed here for several days on a bed and breakfast basis and took most of my meals in the restaurant. My room was an odd mixture of minimalist modernism and a very ancient wooden wardrobe inscribed with its date of manufacture, 1793. The bathroom was very small but functional (shower only, from which it was easy to flood the floor). There were a couple of irritating features/deficiencies, like: no hairdryer. Curtains very thin, letting in street lighting at night and daylight early in the morning. Free wi-fi was provided but it did not work in the room. I had to sit in the corridor to take advantage of this facility.
The restaurant was good, offering reasonably priced Schnitzel, beef, veal and fish dishes, plus the obligatory ‘Maultaschen’, a type of stuffed pasta very popular in Swabia. The draught beer advertised outside was not available. There is a ‘cosy’ bar on the ground floor but it is not recommended to non-smokers as it is licensed for smoking (as many such German establishments still are) - and the regulars make full use of this facility.
The breakfast was very disappointing, consisting mainly of thin slices of cheese and German sausage, cereals and fruit. The tea was so weak as to be undrinkable. And on Sunday, when I had to leave early, I was informed rather gruffly that breakfast would not be available before 8 am.

An atmospheric restaurant although the rustic interior has been slightly overplayed. The portions were very large, and although the menu is limited to the usual German fare it was very well cooked and presented. Service was friendly and efficient and they have an English translation card to help if your German is poor. As expected, a good beer selection and the wines looked reasonable, although I didn't try any.

Was one of two recommended restaurants in the small town and we saw why. Very good.
The owner of the hotel we stayed in referred us to this restaurant, and indeed, it was worthwhile: friendly staff, great food and wine, and the veggie-burger made of zucchini was really to die for!!! The frendly waiter was helpfull in offering the wine choises (my husband took red wine, which he never likes, but this wine he said tasted great, and so it was). Some will like the fact that light is scarse, but even our party existed of only both of us, I found it really dark inside. The next day we went back to have a desert (as I was too stuffed for such the evening before) at its outdoor Seating, but sadly the restaurant was then closed. As we traveled on the next day I must do so in future. Really recommended this restaurant.

Outstanding fine dining restaurant. If you're looking for an extraordinary food and wine experience this is the place to be.
This time we took part in a cookery demonstration and had dinner afterwards. And as the first time the food was great, the wines very well matched to the courses and the whole experience a pleasure.
We started with a mousse from lamb's lettuce with Dublin Bay prawn (Feldsalatmousse mit Kaisergranat), followed by red mullet (Rotbarbe) on a bed of wild cabbage (Grünkohl) with a cumin seed froth (Kreuzkümmelschaum). The main course was dear, poached in wine with liquorize and other spices, together with some cream cheese dumplings and red cabbage.
The dessert was perhaps my favourite, a baked alaska style macadamia nut parfait with citrus fruit. Lovely.
While Zavelstein is a little out of the way, it is well worth the trip. Just make sure you book yourself into the hotel and enjoy the wellness area.

Famous for their ice cream.
We discovered Eiscafe Adria on an overcast day, and were warmly welcomed into a friendly, modern cafe. Our teenage boys enjoyed thick hot chocolates, my hubby had a great cappuccino and I relaxed with my new favourite drink, a Hugo. They also serve delicious pannini, for a good price. The best surprise was the gelato. The best we had on our vacation!

Gotta tell you about my experience here. Stumbled across the place on a trip through the northern Black Forest. A micro brewery with a full blown kitchen German style. The beer tasted great and was brewed as fresh as can be. One can watch the brewery whilst waiting for the food. Everything very German, efficient, stainless and inviting. The food was down-to-earth German Svabian style with Spaetzle being offered too. To my astonishment, the menu was packed with delicacies and they were really affordable. Canadian Buffalo (imported) topped the price range, but that protein must have been shipped here before one can dig in. Great salads too and a big outdoor dining Terrace as well.

Very good quality ice cream, wide variety of flavors. We also had an exquisite italian wine. It is the only place in Calw with good espresso. It has very friendly staff and the service is really good.

In this god forsaken town there is absolutely noting to do. The brauhaus in town however is a absolute gem. Well worth to stop here and have something to eat and drink. Everything they serve is from the region and the quality is of absolute top level. Traditional German food at its best.
