Do not stay here. Novita see's you as a source of money and that's it. I had a terrible experience at Novita's Homestay, and unfortunately left Bunaken with a sour taste in my mouth. Novita is nice up front, but it became very apparent, very quickly how pushy she is for sales and commission. Novita's Homestay does not organize diving, but gets commission from a nice dive resort down the beach. As most travelers do, I wanted to do my own shopping around on the island to find the best dive shop to suit my needs, but she immediately pushed me to the resort she has a deal with (which I will not name, but it is a very nice place!) and had her husband drive me there right away. I didn't really have much of a choice. I ended up going with a different dive shop after visiting 4 more resorts after he brought me back to the homestay. They kept prying me for information, asking me if I'm diving or snorkeling- but with intent to try to push sales. I didn't tell them where I went diving, because I didn't want her to bother the other resort for commission- which they warned me that she would. After spending 2 nights here, I believe it. The last evening I was knackered from diving, so I was having a nap in my room. I listened to Novita yelling at someone for about 20 minutes as I fell asleep. At 6:45pm I was woken up with banging on the door and: "RIA- DINNER!". This is a real "home stay" experience; for a minute I was taken back to being 15 years old, at home with my parents yelling at me. I had to scramble to get clothes on while she was yelling my name. When I came out, half asleep, her husband said dinner was ready. I wasn't hungry and dinner technically isn't served until 7pm. So I said I would eat in 45 minutes. He said to me, "well, it's ready now". So to avoid an awkward/cultural miscommunication, I just ate the food. It took me an hour to eat since I had to force it down. At 8pm, Novita comes over and says, "Are you done? The staff needs to go home". As a business owner, forcing someone to eat faster is unprofessional and rude. Perhaps this was another culture clash, but my patience was running pretty thin. The last straw happened the next morning, where I made my decision to leave a day early. I left the homestay around 6am to have a quick snorkel off the jetty before breakfast. She saw me walk out and I felt like I was a teenager sneaking out. She rudely said to me, "Where are you going?". I said I was going for a walk, smiled and said bye. I had my snorkel and GoPro with me only. I was sitting out on the jetty, and lo and behold, she had sent her husband to come find me. It wasn't a coincidence that he just happened to show up at the jetty. No one else was around! I felt like I was being watched and followed the entire time I stayed here, by Novita. She was trying to keep an eye on me to make sure she knew who to ask for money if I gave them business. The morning I left, she gave me a big hassle and refused to give me my money back. I explained that I had to go back to Manado and she made it extremely difficult. I made the booking through Agoda, but paid in cash when I got there. I understand that Agoda takes a commission from her, but she tried to tell me the cost of the commission was 150 000 rupiah. It's only 22 000 rp, so I was happy to have her take that off the cost of the reimbursement. She said she didn't understand, and then tried to involve another traveler sitting at the table trying to eat her breakfast. She said she didn't understand and made a big hassle. She ended up calling her son, and he was nice about it all. She reluctantly gave me back the entire 150 000 to after hassling for a good 30 minutes. This is the cheapest place to stay in the village. The accommodation itself is clean and there are no complaints about the actual facility or the food. If you are on a budget and want to stay here for 150 000 rp a night, this was my experience. Do what you will with the info! Overall Novita was unprofessional and I did not enjoy my stay. I am a seasoned traveler, and have stayed in many places all over southeast Asia and the world. This was one of my worst experiences and I would never stay here or recommend anyone to stay here. But if you're on a budget- I get it! Just be assertive. Just remember that you have the right to choose the dive shop that meets your needs. It's your decision, not Novita's. You should feel comfortable and safe with the place you choose to dive with. Novita does not care/realize this and only cares about making as much commission as possible off all of her guests.

Fabulous Stay

We booked for 7 but stayed for 9 days we enjoyed ourselves so much. This strip of the island has the calmest water. We could swim right off the beach front. This was the best coral we have ever experienced. The all inclusive meals were particularly excellent. The island got a 24 hour generator which made our lives easier with lights and wifi. Their beer and pop fridge never worked properly so it was always warm. That said some cabins only have a fan and could get quite warm. January is their rainy season but it only rained 3 times at night...funny their was hardly any mosquitoes. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The property, rooms and dining area were always clean and tidy. They are in the process of moving the kitchen and dining area down by the beach. I would strongly recommend this place

We were in Mamaling in 2018 April. The place is hidden in the mangroves, and adventure began already when we had to walk through the low tide ocean to get to this hidden gem. Run by Rose and Tom Mamaling has a great atmosphere of discoveries. Meals are arranged as social gatherings, with visitors having opportunity to talk to each other, listen to marvelous travel stories. Diving / snorkeling is superb not only because of underwater natural treasures, but also due to considerate crew. There is a spirit of summer camp in there.... Really refreshing. We also took a walk to the village one afternoon. The path was challenging, but seeing the genuine local life was really rewarding. We even saw a football match of two (!) local teams. Strongly recommend exploring Bunaken beyond boat trips to diving spots. And finally, Mamaling manages mosquitoes very well. They were there, but our blood vessels seemed to be out of reach for them. Thank you!

I highly recommend staying at Panorama Dive resort!! I came here to relax and dive, and everything was perfect. From arranging transport to get there, finding all creatures underwater (small and big), well arranged dive and snorkel trips to the truly delicious food that is included in the room price. Room has a great sunset, mountain ánd ocean view, very clean, comfortable bed, musquito net, hammock, all you need. The owner Sven is a very nice guy, friendly, ready to help and a very professional dive instructor/guide. The rates for the room are very good especially compared to the quality of the stay. Also diving rates are very good, equipment was well maintained and everything is arranged for you. All in all, perfect stay for diving, snorkling or just relaxing. Not available on booking, just contact Panorama dive resort on their website! Very easy contact

Best Diving in Sulawesi!

Reviewed By Annie W

Bunaken Island has the most incredible coral reefs and sea creatures you'll see in Sulawesi while diving (i'm comparing to Togean and Bira by the way). Dive guides Son and Masza are great and knowledgeable about sea creatures and will point out of small animals to you while diving and bring a go-pro down to take some photos and videos for you for a small charge. Food was delicious although in Indonesia it never seems to be enough for us Westerners so if you've got an appetite, keep some snacks on hand. Breakfast usually consists of fruit and banana pancakes (delicious!) and lunch/dinner is rice, mie goren, grilled fish and some veggies usually. Sometimes there are small brownies or banana bread as well. Local (instant) coffee and team are available 24/7 in the dining area. Bungalows are suitable for the price point but expect bucket showers and toilets and no WiFi. The village on Bunaken island is colorful, the people are warm and welcoming and you get great sunsets on the jetty and beautiful pictures of the people and colorful houses and fishing boats.
