This cavernous outdoor venue (with roof) serves as an impromptu sports bar showing Euro football matches. Mostly beer drinkers. But the fish, esp bar and sol, are excellent. You need transport to get here - and to get away afterwards.

I have been to this place several times. It is in a great location on the water's edge and the two level seating area offers great views especially around sunset. My latest visit there was somewhat spoilt by a mess up with the ordering. This resulted in members of my party not getting what we originally ordered after nearly an hour's wait. What did come was not properly cooked. The staff were somewhat apologetic but were very unwilling to do anything to rectify the situation even though it was their fault. As a result will not go to the Baleine Bleue again - there are plenty of other sea-food places in the locality.

Food was decent...typical Douala beach fare: grilled fish, nice brochettes, some local dishes. I rate it at very good.Ambiance is also nice--it sits right on the water on a quiet river. Unlike other restaurants near the naval base, where tidal shifts can leave you sitting on a pier surrounded by mud, it does not appear nearly as affected. The few times I've been here, the water was always there. I rate ambiance at very good.Getting to the restaurant is a different matter. It's in a "suburb" of Douala called Youpwe on the south west side of the city completely surrounded by swamp. So...let's start with the restaurant's geocoord: 4.006676N,9.700987E. Important, because you may want to locate it on google maps or on your GPS. Now for the directions: from either the airport road or Avenue de Charles de Gaulle, you must get to the roundabout that connects both of these to Avenue de l'Independence. This is the local roundabout that sports a squat looking soldier statue. If you are unfamiliar with Douala, you won't find it easily, so use your GPS or google maps to find geocoords: 4.016399N, 9.69853E. As you go around this roundabout to the southeast, just before exiting it to go towards the airport, you will see a very bad dirt road headed south. There is--in fact--a faded sign from the restaurant there with an arrow. Yes...this horrible road is the correct and only way there. If it's raining heavily and you are not in a four-wheel drive, I would consider coming back another day. The potholes are deep, the road rough. Even in the dry season, you are likely to scrape bottom. Drive slow and carefully: most of the locals are on LOTS of motorbikes and as the road narrows down to one lane, (particularly at night when the small night clubs spread out into the road) you will have to navigate through people who've had too much to drink, moto drivers who've had too much to drink, and shopkeepers who put tables onto the road with abandon. Keep going down this road, remaining on a very gradual left curve. If you have to make a sharp turn, you're not on the right path. Only when you get through most of the town will you finally see the Aquarius on your right. It's now okay to make a sharp turn into the very spacious parking lot.Recommended time to dine for the first time at this restaurant: Sunday lunch. Far fewer crowds on the street, nice place to linger for a long relaxiing lunch. Plus, once you know where it is, you won't have a problem finding it at night.
