Riktigt prisvärd julbuffé , 149kr och det fanns tillräckligt för att bli riktigt mätt. Miljön var väl inget att hurra över men maten smakade bra och som sagt för det priset ska man inte klaga på något

Restaurang Vadstena Valven

Reviewed By Johann-Sandra

Valven is located right in the middle of the old city on the square, two blocks from the lake, very convenient. The food is upscale and so is the price. The restaurant is built through several rooms of an old medieval wine cellar dating back to about 1400 AD, with each room having about 3 or 4 tables tightly placed. The walls are stone so the sound echoes throughout - if you are seated near a larger group the sound is almost deafening because of the amplifier effect. If you want quiet make sure to ask for a room with only couples seated there. We made reservations weeks in advance but when we arrived they didn't have our reservation on a Friday night and the place was packed (make sure to have advance reservations in summer). After some time and confusion, they did find us a table so it wasn't really a problem. When we got home we had an email waiting for us apologizing for the mixup, which was pretty classy we thought, and appreciated. We were with a larger group, so we got to encounter several different dishes. The menu was eloquent with detailed and well-versed descriptions of the dishes. The dishes themselves were mostly "the usual" for a Swedish menu (gös, röding, lamb, veal, etc), but there were some surprises as well. One big surprise was to see scallops on the menu (not common in middle Sweden), so I ordered that. It was fantastic. Others in our group ordered the skagen and found it to be excellent as well. For a main course I ordered the lamb, which was very tasty, though undercooked (still raw in places). The fish got decent if not glowing reviews from our group. The pork was overcooked and very dry, and my wife didn't eat more than one bite. She enjoyed the pasta portion of the pork & pasta combo dish though. For dessert we tried the creme brulee, which was not good at all. I ate one bite and gave it away. Overall it seemed the menu was created by a chef with some ambition and creativity, but the folks actually doing the cooking lacked some skill in the execution. It's a small town in sparsely populated Swedish Lakeland though, so even finding the initial ambition was actually a pleasant surprise.Service was friendly and pleasant though very slow - it was like pulling teeth to get a towel when a child at our table spilled her drink - and they were constantly bringing half the food at one time with the other half coming some 10 minutes later after the first half's food was cold. There is an outdoor dining area in the square as well, which with better weather would have been pleasant. It was just too cold this day for anyone to eat there.Overall, Valven was a relatively pleasant experience - not the best but good. Much better than the restaurant at the convent nearby, and a cut above most restaurants we've been to in Swedish lakeland.

The Vadstena Klosterhotel Restaurant provided not only great food and wine but also an experience that allowed ourselves to be transported back many years ago when the monastery was operating. The service too was divine and I would recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Chicken Caesar and grilled chicken. Food above average.Nice outdoor seating. English menus. Short wait for food but no one should be in a hurry eating lunch in this location. Service friendly and attentive.$33 for 2 which is very fair. Good choice for a pleasant break from touring. If this review is helpful then please indicate so below.

We had dinner twice in this restaurant. The first evening pizza and the second evening salmon. Both dishes were great. We were delighted to get real cooked patatoes with our salmon instead of the boring French Fries. Both times we had dinner outside on the square.

From the outside this place looks like a small restaurant but once inside there are quite a few tables and the outside area has seating for around 30 people. The menu is fairly small but changes regularly (it had only changed the day before we went). The starters were beautifully done with some very interesting flavour combinations that worked brilliantly. The mains were well executed but the flavours didn't quite work - there was far too much going on in the dishes which meant they didn't quite come off. The desserts however were another matter - absolutely stunning. Without fail the staff were friendly and helpful - the young chef explained that the rhubarb came from her mother's garden and she picked all the herbs herself for the dishes.Definately worth a visit and I would love to go back again.
