A great coffee, jazz, cozy design, terrace. One fail - espreso with ice. Last year it was wonderful drink without milk. In this year I got milky coffee, and next time just hot espresso with ice cube. Maybe they change barista, I don't know.

"Rendez Vous" Steak House & Grill

We three middle-aged British guys were exploring lesser known parts of Latvia since visiting the more popular tourist destinations three and eleven years before.I am wring this a week later on a bus between Ventspils and Riga as we are leaving the next day (8/7) so I hope this is an accurate description helped by my pics which I have posted. I deleted the pics of the menu and bill as they have already gone online so will update later when reliably online (bus wifi is unreliable as is 4G cross country)One destination we decided to go to was a Visaginas as it promised a Soviet style atmosphere and an Atomic power station to visit, albeit close for to the Green Party in coalition. On arriving via a train on Thursday 29/6 in the countryside on a wet day we were not impressed with the weather although through the forest we found an interesting town. We had already booked Visaginas Apartment (on maps.me) ahead via b.c and settled in after drying out. I looked up venues for eating and RV was close by but expensive. We went on an exploratory walk after the rain stopped and popped by at around 16:45.A very friendly waiter with very good English showed us the menu, mostly grills and meat as one can imagine but not cheap in this remote town. The place was swish and smart, as was he. We explained we were not hungry yet and would explore. We left thinking we might find somewhere cheaper and more Latvian. On our wanderings we found some places on the maps.me and TA but they were either closed, not suitable or not appealing. We did find a place next to one described (permanently closed) on maps.me which was a first floor bar with a terrace serving local food. We ate a light meal at 19:00 which did us well for €18 including a beer each). I entered 'Vilkaragis' on maps.me and TA to spread the word.We went back to the apartment after the long but dry walk and had a rest and catch-up. The town had obviously had a lot of infrastructure improvements paid for by the EU as the sole reason for its existence, the power station, had closed. Blocks of flats renovated, cycle routes, playgrounds, recycling and paths improved. It is a pity that the very rich UK is not going to help these communities enhance their Quality of Life after Brexit. They really do need support, as Welsh mining communities did from the EU too! The youngsters would soon flee if they had a chance if their hometowns offered them nothing. In time we were quite hungry again and decided that we would give RV a try as the young man really did make an effort and nowhere else actually was suitable or appealing. We arrived at 21:15, chose a table inside near the (cooler) terrace and a female waitress (who did not speak a English) presented some menus. He was still around thankfully, we saw, and eventually appeared, obviously pleased we had returned. He helped us through the menu and we explained we were not too hungry as had eaten earlier. This did not daunt him. My friends, being not strictly vegetarians, opted for fish based meals as the lake was close by anyway! We had to order a round of beers to help us choose. They came quickly and he explained their provenance. He was obviously trying to practice his English and appreciated the chance. We decided we would actually have a soup course too as it was quite a nice atmosphere, not quite our usual style but the music was fine. A few others were dining, mostly on the terrace, which was a bit too cold for us. The door yo the terrace blew open frequently and a cold draught got uncomfortable. A regular customer obviously noticed this on our behalf and when he was all alone dining locked himself out within their keys! How considerate! I acknowledged his consideration! My friend's onion soup was very cheesy and tasty. As was my other friend's Soup. My chicken soup consommé was also good with lots of chicken in. A tray of white bread helped with the mopping up!The mains arrived in good time afterwards and were well presented as befits the style of this restaurant. I had grilled home-made sausages with roasted vegetables, which was two good sized sausages that were tasty and cooked well but not burnt or charred. My friend's fish fillet with chips was also tasty and he loved the chips. My other friend liked his fish fillet with salad vegetables. The food was overall good but we all regretted afterwards not having a proper steak each as it was their forté obviously and we are not strict veggies! The food was accompanied by a second beer each to help the food go down! The price was a reasonable €2.80, for a half litre, each so affordable to have another.By 22:20 we had finished and asked for the bill. The waiter presented us and then explained enthusiastically how it had been a real pleasure to serve us and chat to us about all sorts of issues (he was not very busy so had time!). He wanted to study business studies in Riga and set up his own gym as he liked keeping fit himself. Good luck to him! Hopefully his English will help him in his quest! The total bill was €50 and we gave him a €5 tip as he had made such an effort serving us, ultimately learning English well and representing the better qualities of hospitality and service for his country in such a remote non-touristy place!I think we made his day, week or month, perhaps! He even did a selfie of us all!Whilst I was there I took advantage of their free wifi to upload lots of internal pics as none from customers on TA surprisingly. The next morning I ran round to take external shots before I walked briskly to the bus station to take a bus to Daugavpils the other side of the border in Latvia.
