Klostergasthaus Thallern

Reviewed By Itinerant_scholar

During previous visits to Gumpoldskirchen and the surrounding area, Madame and I had not yet gotten to Kostergasthaus Thallern -- but this time we did, on a Thursday evening, and we enjoyed ourselves so much we came back the next night. The first visit it was Wienerschnitzel (Kalbschnitzel, rather than the pork variety, but that's also good); the next night we shared a main dish of Zweibelrostraten. Both dinners were terrific. Salads -- very generous mixed greens -- were included, along with a starch, and the level of cooking is highly accomplished. The highlight of each night was a bottle of the house's own sparkling wine -- Sekt Brut -- which is worth a detour to taste and enjoy. The establishment produces a number of other wines which we have not tasted but are likely quite good too. As noted, the waitstaff are really helpful and friendly, as well as tolerant of bad tourist German (particularly my own); English-language menus are available, but as is often the case the German-language menus contain more choices. So ask for the latter, and don't be the least bit reluctant to ask for translation and ordering help. Service is very friendly, as are the other diners, and multi-lingual. The first night we were seated in a beautiful blond-wood dining room with a real Alpine atmosphere -- the second night, in an equally comfy room that was more like a village Stuberl. Desserts are terrific too -- on Thursday night, a Weiner Apfelstrudel with a wonderful pastry crust, and then on Friday a creme brulee that ought to be illegal in about 43 states and 160 countries -- it was that good. Prices are moderate, the major cards are accepted, and there is plenty of parking. We hope to return during warmer months, not just for another dinner but also to sample more of the Weingut Thallern wines. Your intrepid respondent will be sure to send you all a full report...

Gave one because my partner said his meal was good. Staff are rude and mocking unless you speak german. As we were deciding our waiter approached and said "he had all night" like we were keeping him from something. Rant over don't bother with this place pleanty or better places with far nicer staff.

Really beautiful restaurant with excellent fresh local cuisine. There's a lovely private room for small gatherings and a beautiful garden. This is a bit far from the center, but it's worth the ride to dine in a true local treasure.

We stopped in here for Sunday lunch after a long drive around Austria.A pity it was a little too windy to sit outdoors or we would have, however, the view is unbeatable whether you are indoors or out. You can view entire Vienna & more from up on that hill which must be phenomenal on a hot summers day...or in winter for that matter. The food was really good. I had the summer salad with beef strips & my husband had the seasonal asparagus wrapped in ham & cheese which was also very good. Service was ok!Highly recommended if you are in the Mödling area for a superb view.

A four-course dinner with a great selection of wines from Weingut Alphart am Muehlbach (Traiskirchen).Choice of smoked Zander or ravioli stuffed with ricotta, washed down with a Spaetrot Rotgipfler.Delicious onion soup followed with a Chardonnay. I don't usually like this wine, but was pleasantly surprised as it was young and not too heavy!Saibling or Beef in Red wine followed - chose the latter with the Pinot Noir - full and with a long aftertaste on the palate.Pudding came with a (too) sweet Rotgipfler Sweet Selection but it was followed by a Rotgipfler Sweet - much nicer! All in all a great evening with very generous wines from Lorenz and great service/food from the team as always. Very reasonable price of €60 per person including all the wines...do hope they have more of these!!

Haus der biere is a very nice pub, located in the center of Mödling, next to the church. We went there for lunch on Sunday and we were very happy to find it open ( from 11 a.m. on). As the weather was not good, we sat inside, but the pub offers also tables for outdoor sitting (must be really nice). Just have in mind that it a smoking place and in both rooms smoking is allowed. We ordered the Mexican ribs (also there is a promo - if you order ribs before 19:00, the price is 11,5€). There are a few types of ribs, but these were the only chilly ones. The portion is enough for two people and it is really delicious. For two portions of runs, 5 schpritzer and a beer we paid 36 €. I can recommend this place.

Panorama Restaurant

Madame and I were casting about for a nice lunch on a recent foggy, drizzly Saturday. We had heard about Panorama, and even drove past it on our way up to Modling in search of a restaurant that turned out to have no parking. So we headed back and did what we should have done in the first place, which was to give Panorama a try.So glad we did -- the place was busy, in a somewhat relaxed fashion, even a little after 2PM on this particular day. Still, service was friendly and well-organized. Madame opted for the smaller portion of Kalbsschnitzel -- having gone Schnitzel-free all week, why not? -- and pronounced it excellent. And, as advertised, the smaller portion was just right for a senior appetite. My choice was fried Zander (lake pike-perch) fillets, and they were superb too. Tomato soup as a starter on her side of the table, and a rucola salad on mine, were equally good; dessert (a small souffle for her, and tiramisu for me) was downright decadent. A few glasses of Gruner Veltliner, and then large coffees to finish, left us with a sense of complete well-being. Same for the bill, which was surprisingly easy on the wallet. The atmosphere is that of a gracious, welcoming country establishment of some years' vintage, one with a large local clientele. Some good-sized parties were accommodated at one end of the dining room, but noise levels were still quite acceptable. The "panorama" part was not quite in evidence: we could tell from the location that the dining room's big windows would look out on something, but it was so foggy that day that all we could see was the back garden. Later, though, we learned that in clear weather a view of all Vienna, or most of it, is spread out below, and that at the right time of evening we might sit outdoors and watch the city light up. That would definitely be a fine added attraction -- just one more reason why we'll definitely try to return. There is ample parking in front of the restaurant, or just off to the side through an archway. American Express is not accepted but Visa cards are welcome. Judging by our visit, children are welcome as well --

First of all, there are several rooms here so be sure to book if you want to sit in the no-smoking area! The menu is classic Austrian with some specials thrown in for good (?) measure! My husband chose the Tiril liver, which came with bacon, plenty of gravy (he was a happy bunny) and small roast potatoes on the side. Looked and tasted delicious.I opted for the special - smoked leg of venison with rice/risotto. For some reason, I had expected it to be on the bone (yes, I realise now that it would have been a very big one!) and it was not - it also looked extremely dry. No sauce except for the risotto and so I was disappointed as it tasted almost as dry as it looked. Comments were passed back to the chef as this was a new dish and our waiter had not seen it before. Nothing came back from the kitchen.....We were here to watch a jazz performance in the cellar - they have regular events. Will not visit again to eat..
