Grove Golf Club

Went to the Grove recently and mixed feelings about the food and service, nice welcome and shown to our table, (4 of us) waitress took our drinks order and then came back to take our food order, I had plumped for the 2 course at £9.95 and ordered the pate then the ham and coleslaw, pate was lovely but a bit too much as it was quite rich, waited quite a long time for all our mains to arrive and this is where the mixed feelings came into play. My mum had the plaice and she enjoyed that, one of my sisters had the turkey in pepper sauce, turkey was tender and plenty of it (but the sauce was more like gravy with peppercorns in it), my other sis had Cajun Hake and she said that was nice, my ham was disappointing as I had asked whether it was home boiled ham but no it was thin ham which you can buy in a supermarket, quite a lot of it but rather tasteless. All meals came with frozen chips and frozen peas and for the price we did expect freshly cooked proper chips! No one came to ask if our meals were ok, so wasn't impressed with that either, just left to get on with it. My two sisters and mum ecided to have dessert but because they were busy with a large party of ladies, it was hard trying to attract their attention so knowing they had this large party in plus other people eating they should have put more staff on. In fact while waiting to get someones attention we stacked our own plates ready to be collected - again not good service at all.Desserts were eventually ordered but we all though they were expensive at £5.25 each although the ice cream my mother had was £3.95Overall disappointed with the food and service and would we go back, no sorry we all agreed we wouldn't. Lovely views over the golf course but that's about it, hence the poor rating.

Massive menu choice plus specials board.Really nice restaurant as well as bar and lounge areas. Dog friendly section. Good quality food, friendly staff, well priced. As a visitor to the area we were not even sure what the food offering was as the menu display area by the entrance was empty. Well worth going in to ask. Many thanks for you kind words. I have recently taken over the lease of the pub, therefore we are in the process of altering the menu slightly, once it has been completed it will be displayed at the entrance to the pub. I’m very pleased you enjoyed

Visited here for an evening meal. We were told from the onset that middle section of the menu was only available at lunchtime but everything else & the specials board was available. We decided to have the carvery only to be told that the carvery was only available at lunchtime (even though it was advertised on the Specials board. In hindsight we should have left then but instead opted to have the fish & chips. Bad move the batter on the fish was overcooked just short of being burnt, some of the chips were undercooked and the peas were anaemic. I only ate a small amount and that was only because I was starving. Needless to say we will not be visiting again

Went for a quick lunch today at the seagull pub. It was absolutely stunning. Very tasty. Amy behind the bar was pleasant and so welcoming and the service was fast and efficient. The chef obviously prepared the food with care and thought.I would definitely visit this pub again. It was a lovely experience.

The Lorelei were kind enough to accommodate us at short notice for Sunday lunch. This time we all decided to go for the 'small' meal to save waste. The small meal is massive!Excellent food, service and ale as usual.

6 of us called in for a late lunch bar meal, barman friendly and very helpful. Pub itself was cosy with wood beams and flagstone flooring. Menu a little fancier than your usual pub grub but tasty.Limited choices for our coeliac vegetarian diner (had salmon salad-without salmon).Thank you for this lovely review and your kind comments, it is great to hear you enjoyed your visit. I will pass on your comments regarding coeliac vegetarian options to the catering team for consideration for future menus. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future, Kind regards

Globe Inn

We went to the globe this evening due to the various recent reviews describing the changes to the menu as everytime we have eaten there before rhe food was horrendous. There are no changes whatsoever, the menu is exactly the same with barely any choices for vegetarians or vegans. Needless to say we went to the Ancient Briton where the food is always excellent.

Booked a table and called in for an early evening meal with family. The restaurant was quite quiet initially and we bought some drinks at the bar and were shown to our table. The 2 female waitresses were less than friendly - no rapport with the customers and didn’t know when asked what was in a specific dish - always a little worrying! The waitresses were so unfriendly that I thought we were speaking a different language. When the food arrived, one of the meals was wrong and 2 other meals were missing the portion of rice as described in the menu. So a 5 minute wait for the rice to arrive and a further 5 minutes for the correct meal to arrive. In this time, some of the group had finished their meal.A large party then arrived and the the noise from them made the noise in the room unbearable. We had to ask for the dessert menu twice and when it didn’t arrive after 10 minutes we asked for the bill and left.Food was ok but a really disappointing experience and we wouldn’t return. Keep driving past the Angel to the ‘Prince of Wales’ at Kenfig and you’ll get a better meal and service.

The Jolly Sailor

We were going to another venue nearby but decided to go to the Jolly Sailor instead and what a result, a locally supported Pub, with a small restaurant, if you wish to go "book". Firstly we were greeted by a very lively and bubbly waitress, who was absolutely fantastic and friendly, her name was Joy, evidently 'Bundles' to those that know her. I had the pie it was absolutely delicious and my wife had the Madras which was equally as delicious. I would recommend this popular pub every time, we even booked another night before we left. For Pubs that do food I only ever give them a 4* rating, but this deserves a 5*s all the time, steeped in history the oldest pub in Porthcawl.Congratulations to Chef and his wife on there new arrival. This is why I love pubs like this you get to know everything. Keep it up and well done.
