Ate Dinner here on two nights over a weekend (closed Mondays). Good atmosphere, friendly, efficient service. Popular with locals, not just tourists like us. Booking recommended. Food was typical German, tasty with good sized helpings. Beer on tap, and wine by the glass. Not cheap but acceptable value. Limited English spoken but have translated menus.

We have visited Schonach for our Black Forest holidays for several years. We always go to Wilhelsmhohe several times during our visit with different family members. During the last week we went three times for an evening meal with three of our grand children aged 8, 13 and 15. The food was superb , freshly cooked, good portions and great variety . A hit with all of us --young and old!!We cant understand why this is not NUMBER ONE in Schonach.. We certainly be visiting again when we return in August. The family are so friendly and the location is very beautiful. You must try it if you are within 25 miles!

Zum Bäreneckle, a typical Black Forest Inn, is a perfect pick to relax after a long hike or for simply enjoying the views across the Rhine Valley and the Kandel. If you come this time of the year, you'll find the balconies showered with colourful flowers, and flower boxes lined all around the picturesque farm houses - beautiful! Another plus - it's reachable on foot and by car.The dining room has been refurbished with friendly, bright pine wood furniture - in sync with traditional craftsmanshift and presence. There is an oven with a bench, and next to it the Stammtisch where friends of the house gather and play cards. The menu offers kid-friendly and senior-friendly dishes at reduced prices. There is a seasonal soup - we're in sorrel season now - and most of the menu is classic German. I'm told on weekends people drive up just to buy their tarts and cakes. While I loved the location, setting, and surroundings, I was not at all convinced by the food. I began with the sorrel soup - it had a nice sour twist to it, but swam in - heavy cream. Not that it was announced on the menu as such - I wouldn't have picked it, I wanted something veggie and light. Next I chose trout - a native from the local lakes. Can't go wrong with that I thought - you cannot get them any fresher. What I didn't expect was the fish to swim in a foamy sauce of heavy cream, nor did I expect it to arrive in filets. While this makes sense for some people saving them the hassle of fighting against tiny bones, it makes the flesh - dryer. And the sauce, the creamy sauce, endemic in German, is never a sign of good cuisine. On the side came that sad trio of German vegetables nobody particularly envies us for - coliflower, carrots, turnip. Cooked in water, topped with... a rich, heavy cream sauce, think bechamel. To compensate, I must say that their open Riesling from the Baden wine area (I didn't get to see the bottle) tasted delicious and made up for some of the creamy lunch experience. Sadly, the experience confirmed that if traditional German kitchen were great, it would have conquered the world, like Italian, Thai or Peruvian food. But it hasn't. Mass wisdom. Just look at the ingredients - and enjoy the views.

Gasthof Rossle

This place is a gem. We were recommended it by a local shopkeeper in Schonwald - and found it a few miles through some mountain roads, at the bottom of a ski-run. Lovely old gasthof, full of Black Forest charm with a regular menu of schnitzel and meat.I was fully resigned to another plate of salad and french fries, but was pleasantly surprised when my fiancee pointed to a vegetarian dish on the menu. The waiter confirmed it was completely vegetarian and I dived-in...The plate that arrived was superb. A smorgasbord of different root veg and legumes, all cooked nicely and although most of it was braised or fried, it wasn't heavy in the slightest. Even brough me around to the dreaded fenell! I hate that root, but this braised version was absolutely delicious, I'm converted. If you get a chance to visit this place GO, the food was superb (all my meat-eating partners loved it) and the ambience and staff were superb.recommended unreservedly.

Schwarzwaldgasthof Schwanen

Dinner here was fabulous. The food was delicious. Service was fantastic. Our waitress Gabi was very helpful AND she spoke English. The interior of the restaurant was incredible. The steak was brought out on a hot stone where you continued to cook it exactly how you liked it....rare, medium, well done. There also was a salad bar where you could take all you wanted. The restaurant is very close to Freiburg (the place for Cuckoo Clocks) so you can buy your hand made clock and come here for a delicious dinner.

Our family and another needed a place to eat for our last night in the Black Forest, we were staying in Winden not far from Elzach).Had a look around Elzach and the first few restaurant we went to were full, we tried this place and although we couldn't sit outside on this beautiful evening (it was busy) we sat inside. We were seated fairly quickly, although could have been offered drinks a bit quicker than we were, so we could sit back and relax before ordering our meals. The meals came soon after our drinks (most ordered Italian (pizzas and pasta), I ordered a steak (as I needed a red meat dish), but the order was messed up, so - no steak. They apologised and cooked me a steak, which arrived well after the others had eaten their meal. When my steak arrived - it was very good, a magnificent mushroom sauce.Overall a pretty good meal and good atmosphere. They were apologetic about the mix-up.Yes, we would eat there again.

This restaurant is located on L107 between Gutach and Elzach. Apparently it is a guest house as well, but we only visited the restaurant. It is located right on the ridge line, and thus gives beautiful views to both East and West. L107 is a small but beautiful winding road. We stopped in for supper on a whim but were so fortunate as it was a beautiful Summer afternoon, and we were able to sit out on the terrace and soak in the gorgeous view. We both enjoyed our schnitzel and thought the prices were very reasonable for that part of Germany. Dessert was a heaping bowl of strawberries and ice cream (I am sure seasonal). For people who usually get their strawberries from several states away, we thought they were delicious. The waiter spoke good English and was very attentive. The menu is just in German, but you can peruse it on their website. We thought this restaurant was a hidden little gem.

We were day trippers to the delightful village of Elzach and stopped for lunch at this restaurant. What a delight. The atmosphere and decor is very authentic German style, friendly service. We were the only non German speakers, but it was not a problem. We started with soup of the day, probably the best soup I have ever tasted, zucchini soup with an incredibly well flavoured chicken stock. Then we had a small and large pork schitzel. Cooked to perfection and served with a side of vegetables all prepared with taste in mind. The meal including 2 large biers was €34, pretty good value and overall a memorable and unexpectedly good dining experience.

It's hidden in a valley at the black forest approx 30 km away from Freiburg and it's a champion in good food without any big show around that you may find in star awarded restaurants. The dining area has got a warm and cosy atmosphere combined with the rustically black forst style. I'm not the big fish fan but this place makes me enthusiastic for their fish creation. Not to forget to mention that they have also very well done typical dishes.
