What a lovely evening at this fantastic restaurant. I suggest the fish dumplings...the taste was incredible. For dessert we tried the sorbets with alcohol...super!!! The only thing that could be improved on is ventilation. We went there on a very hot day and there were no fans or air conditioning unit so some moments were really unbearable. The owners are very friendly and helpful.

Waldgasthaus Kohlbergwiese

short walk/drive from the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (Rte 500) in the Black Forest, Germany. Locally famous hikers' stop. However, also a ripoff.

Reviewed By Griffoen

While driving along the romantic Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (Black Forest Highway) on a beautiful weekend, we made an impromptu stop near the village of Bühl. There is a nice-looking hotel nearby but we became intrigued by the signposting to a Waldgasthaus (forest inn) called Kohlbergwiese and decided in favour of a short hike through the forest to reach it. The place looked pleasant enough (and in fact one can reach it by car, we saw) and several families and hikers were playing, lunching, and otherwise occupied on outside tables. We ordered simple meals, myself a Wurstsalat -which turned out horrible- and trout fillets for my wife -which were ok-, and two glasses of the local white wine. As always we asked for two glasses of tap water on the side.Imagine our surprise to see 3.60 euros added to our -hand-scribbled- bill for the latter! Questioning the waitress and mild protest yielded nothing but the comment that this was "house policy" for tap water... even if it accompanies a full meal (we might have understood for instance if we just had passed by and asked for two glasses, but none of that).Needless to say almost, this charge is nowhere on the menu and we were also not given an itemized bill. Tidy little profit there we thought, with 3.60 euro for 0.4 liters of tap water, even deducting the cost of cleaning the glasses... Tap water in Baden-Württemberg costing about 4.25 euro per cubic meter (that's 1000 liters) we are looking, nay staring goggle-eyed at a gross profit margin of about 210,000%, none of which appears to be shared with the local tax authorities. Nein danke!

Just as a starting note; the restaurant staff is smoking at the entrance of the restaurant. I find that strange for a restaurant which tries to sell itself a la a fine dining restaurant. We reserved a table at 7.30/8 pm and arrived at 8.30 pm. We were welcomed by an impolite man who told us that, in line with international standards, our table was cancelled. Another waiter seemed to disagree with him but the person continued to refuse us and seemed to enjoy it. The impolite man also told us that the restaurant had called us just before to check if we were still coming. This was an outright lie. We have checked our history of phone calls and they had not called us. We will never go back to NIGRUM and have enjoyed that night an excellent dinner at the Geroldsauer Muhle in Baden-Baden full of atmosphere, great food and excellent service.

We purchased the two-night / one four-course dinner (with wine) arrangement ‘Ein Schloss zum Kennenlernen’ (‘Get to know a castle’) for €225 per person sharing a double room, incl. breakfast. Our room in the ‘Residenz’ was clean and comfortable, simply but adequately decorated. Our nights were hot, and the air conditioning too weak to lower the nighttime temperature sufficiently. However, windows on two sides meant we could at least get a breeze passing through the room. The bed was comfortable, but there was only one choice of duvet and this was too heavy. The bathroom was big enough and the shower excellent. WiFi was free but erratic. Our evening meal was good value as part of the package, but not really up to the Michelin-star standard the we were expecting. The first course was a series of variations on the tomato - not overly interesting - followed by a very good sea-bass. Then came duck breast, fine in the case of my wife but mine was tough. Dessert was sorbet with a selection of fruit. Four local wines accompanied the meal - a Sekt, a Weissburgunder (pinot blanc), an Auxerrois and a Spaetburgunder (pinot noir); all were serviceable, none out of the ordinary. Service was friendly and reasonably efficient, though it was too fast at the start of our meal and too slow as the restaurant filled up. We ate on a delightful terrace with the slope of the vineyard behind us. The breakfast buffet was up to standard.I’m awarding a ‘4’, which I think is a fair reflection of the package as a whole, considering the price. But don’t expect either a luxurious room or a top evening meal.

This is a fantastic restaurant with great German food using local produce. The portion sizes are very good, the taste and food quality outstanding. We sat in the garden and it was really lovely, however the main dining room also looked very inviting. The lamb, chicken and goat dishes were all outstanding. This was a very lovely dining experience and I would highly recommend a drive and Sunday lunch at Lamms.

Nice view over the Rhine Valley into France and the Vogesen mountains from the terrasse. Ulmer beer on tap, unfortunately only small glasses to be had though. I had the sirloin steak with herbal butter and fries, very good and cooked just as I ordered it. My wife had the Salmon with Linguine in a curry sauce. Both were very good, and I can recommend this location wholeheartedly.

The dishes here were a bit hit and miss. Unfortunately the main dish we wanted to try (the local trout) was already finished at 8pm on a Saturday so we did not have the pleasure of trying it and I found the menu fairly limited for alternative fish / light dishes. However all the food was very well presented and good with the exception of one dish which was a gnocchi with a local interpretation of sauce and not at all to our liking. That's fine but if 80% of a dish is not eaten its nice if the staff can take an interest in why so feedback can be passed on to the chef. The restaurant is a 15 minute drive from Baden and tucked away at the end of a residential road but a very charming setting with a garden terrace and pond and water feature. Avoid the gnocchi - ask when booking if all fish is available and you will have a good experience. Its also a good place to go with groups as you can still hear one another in this very peaceful setting.
