The point of visiting Baarle is its amazing legacy of complicated Netherlands/Belgian borders. Baarle-Hertog is a Belgian island just inside the Netherlands and it merges into the other half of the town, Baarle-Nassau. There are also Dutch Islands within Baarle-Hertog. The best place to enjoy all this fun is Den Engel. It's strictly in the Netherlands, but at one end of its outdoor Terrace is the Belgian border, and you can enjoy the fun of a table straddling it and people sitting at the table being in different countries. It's a bustling place with a large menu. We enjoyed our soup, caesar salad, ham and salad baguette Sandwich, cappuccino and (Belgian) Jupiler draught beer. Service a bit slow at lunchtime on the Easter Monday we were there, but very friendly service from our waitress Yasmin.

It is the type of restaurant where you eat all you can. You pay a fee at the entrance and then everything you want to eat and drink is free. The food is very well prepared and you can choose also for wok or teppanyaki. They have a lot of choices. The staff is very friendly and they speak English, if you don't know Dutch.

As I mentioned in the title, the food is good, actualy: it's great! It just, what I'm trying to say is that it is slightly overpriced. Dinner for 4 will cost about 160 euro.

We ordered a cappuccino and a tea. We asked what kind of tea they had and the waiter said he would bring the box so I could choose. About 15 minutes later I got a small cup of hot water and a regular tea bag. My husband went to ask for the box of teas and was told to bring it to me himself!
My husband didn't finish his cappuccino. He loves coffee but said this one tastes horrible.
The decor was strange, lots of wood, crucifixes, oil paintings of Mary and Joseph, statues of Jesus (about 7 of them!) and a huge clock on the wall which wasn't working. There were chandelier-type lights suspended over tables which were covered in dust. The menu was just run of the mill fried snacks and sandwiches so we didn't eat.

We had never been to this restaurant even when we live in this village. After our visit, I surely don't understand why. We were the only guests (it was a wednesday), but that didn't disturb us and it was still cosy. The staff was really friendly and the meals were served on time (perhaps it could have been a little more faster). The waitress asked several times if we enjoyed the meal and checked if we wanted more drinks. The food was delicious. You can choose a menu for 30,- euros or you can choose other dishes. I chose the vegeterian menu (a goatcheese salad (entrée) and a vegetable burger for the main course). It tasted really nice! Because I was stuffed I chose an Italian Coffee as dessert, instead of a nice bowl of ice cream or a chocolate mousse. Nobody of our party had a complaint and everything we ate tasted very good!

De Bourgondische Brouwerij Weelde

Reviewed By Enjoy1962 - Zurich, Switzerland

On our way back from an appointment in Belgium we were looking for a place to have a quick lunch.
We found the Bourgondische Brouwerij in Weelde. A little town just across the border.
The outside of the restaurant didn't look that nice but there was a sign of an open Terrace and because the weather was nice we decided to try it.
Walking through a gate we came in the huge garden with Terrace where we could sit outside.
We ordered a Super Bourgondische Uitsmijter (a dutch dish with bread and eggs and in this case with onions and bacon) and a Toast Kannibaal (two toasted pieces of bread with raw meat and onions, boiled egg and some salad).
The portion of the 'uitsmijter' was indeed huge but it's price worthwile. That couldn't been said of the toast. Wayout in price for what you get.
The quality was nice but not special. Based on the Terrace where you could sit in the sun I would come back. Based on the food we had, not!

This restaurant looks quite inviting from the outside and has a very clean Terrace area at the front (next to the road). The inside is also very clean, nicely decorated and has a warm and comfortable (brown café style) atmosphere to it. Free parking is available along the roadside next to the restaurant.
The menu has a reasonable choice of starters, main courses and desserts on it, but can be slightly confusing to understand what is included in the ‘set-menus’ and what can be ordered separately, or a combination of both. The prices are also quite reasonable and are slightly cheaper than in other restaurants of this standard.
Our food was served very quickly and the personnel were friendly. The taste was generally very good (for the price), but we did have some remarks such as the ‘Asparagus Salad’ starter had almost no asparagus in it and we missed having some vegetables with the main courses. The quantity of ‘french-fries’ however was far too much for anyone to eat (which was clear to see, as most other guests around us also left piles of them on their plates). Perhaps a few more vegetables and less french-fries would be a ‘tip’ for the kitchen staff. I can however recommend the ‘ham’ (‘beenhammetje’) as a main course, which was very tasty and plentiful.
In general, the taste and quality of the food here is good and it is definitely a pleasant place to visit if you are in the area.

Restaurant Barabas

It was our first stay in Baarle Hertog. The Lantaern is a real must to visit. On a Warn summer night like we had the terras at the back is very nice. You have to find the restaurant. It's just outside the center. Entrance looks more like a bar. You can taste beer and whisky's also. The Dutch owners were very hospital.
