Rose and Crown

The Rose and Crown is a friendly village inn where we pride ourselves on serving restaurant food at realistic prices. Our menu changes frequently with a focus on freshness, flavours and quality seasonal fare. These can be accompanied by our varied selection of New and Old World wines or our traditional ales.

Thai Basement

First time visit to this quirky location and we had no idea what to expect. Everything about it was a pleasant surprise. The building itself and the way the space had been used was unique and memorable. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was very good indeed. The portions are generous and we happily took some home for later. Will certainly be going back soon and recommending The Basement to our friends.

This is a great country pub - well kept, very comfortable and with great food and beers. Food is truly very good, with a great choice of imaginative but unpretentious dishes. Enjoyed perfect lamb steak with lamb sausage with red wine sauce on braised leeks, lots of good fresh veg and superb home made chips. Also salmon on roast fennel, plus drinks and an excellent pudding - £80 for 4 persons. Lots of good tables and open fires.
A level above normal pub grub, but with lots of standard dishes, such as pies, casseroles, superb gammon and eggs and house burger.

The Saracen's Head

Award winning family run Derbyshire gastro pub close to the market town of Ashbourne. Listed in the Michelin Guide 2017 & Harden's Best UK Restaurant Guide 2017.

This was our second visit to this friendly, welcoming gastropub, with the local dogs warming up in front of the log fire. We passed on the starters, hoping to leave some room for a pudding, but all four of us were to full up after our mains to even look at the pudding menu! The crispy half duckling that three of us had was quite simply the best duck we have ever eaten anywhere. The fourth member of the party had boeuf bourgignonne and was equally impressed.
Well worth the short detour off the Derby to Ashbourne road, we are not surprised that this gem won the Derbyshire Gastropub of the year award last year.

The Royal Oak Hotel Restaurant

Reviewed By John S - Bedford, United Kingdom

It is always a good sign when a restaurant is heaving with local people - the atmosphere was great, every table taken and the staff were clearly in their element, ensuring people were having a good meal and enjoying themselves! We were staying nearby and were looking for a pub meal - this was just the right place. Wide choice of pizza, grills, Greek food and English pub standards - we chose whitebait and calamari for starters, both came with generous Greek salads and were VERY good. We fancied kebabs and were not disappointed when the dishes arrived - four skewers of chicken and lamb on each plate with french fries and pitta with salad. Fantastic value.

When we walked in we weren't bowled over, and it's true there are prettier, more atmospheric pubs in the area. The faded plastic flowers in the loos could go, too.
However the service was mostly friendly and the food fantastic, and we could see why the place was so popular. We had the squash curry and the three bean chilli and really enjoyed both. It gets very busy on Saturday nights (we were squeezed in as it was so early in the evening when we arrived but the phone rang a lot and larger groups had to be turned away) so although we were lucky, would recommend booking in advance!

The Bowling Green Inn

With this many reviews and this many high ratings my expectations were raised high. So maybe it's not so surprising to have come out disappointed. The servings are plenty and the meat was good. But if you aim to be an good restaurant you can't just dump boiled and rather tasteless vegetables on the plate. The apple pie added much to the disappointement. Nevermind that it looked like it had been violently slapped on the plate for punishment. Presentation doesn't matter so much if you finally serve something delicious. The pastry not sweet, which could be considered a minor mistake, and it was basically raw / unedible, save for the outermost 5 millimiter of it. They were supposed to have a guest ale, but they had ran out of, so I can't comment on the that. The remaining offer of beers on tap was uninspired.

The Lighthouse Restaurant

Boylestone is a lovely, very small village midway between Ashbourne and Uttoxeter in pretty Derbyshire countryside. It's 15 minutes off the A50, a major road. Frankly, it is worth every minute of your journey even were you driving from London.
I'm a Californian first introduced to tasting menu dining at Thomas Keller's French Laundry in Napa Valley, which for a couple of years was judged the best restaurant in the world until surpassed by Ferran Adrià's elBulli. Owner-Chef Jon Hardy is not yet in Keller's and Adrià's league, but his basic instincts, talent and ambition are, and on full display: A dozen tasting dishes of beef, lamb, fowl, fish and vegetable, each beautifully crafted and presented, are stylishly served by a well trained, knowledgeable staff member who will make you feel welcome and comfortable. Each of the 10 to 12 courses is designed to present the diner with a unique look, taste, texture or combination of features that in a couple of bites will delight your senses and spark your curiosity. Yes, each plate is quite small, but in combination the meal is physically, visually and emotionally quite satisfying. I am confident you will enjoy it. The menu is changed often as seasonal ingredients become available. Occasionally special menus are also offered, such as an Indian menu in March.
The restaurant features a small well stocked bar, unfortunately without a trained bartender to provide you with a range of cocktails. There is a very good but small, reasonably priced wine list expertly selected to accompany dinner.
On the weekday evening we attended the restaurant was full, so Reservations are advised. We found the diners well dressed but comfortable. The Lighthouse is located in an attractive new building not visible from the road, but immediately behind The Rose & Crown pub. Adequate, adjacent parking is available.

Stopped off after a 4 mile walk around Dovedale. Sadly missed the lunchtime food offer by 15 minutes. No matter, a pint, with a homemade pork pie and fries, in the courtyard was sufficiently delicious; accompanied with English mustard and chutney, just to add to the experience.
Definitely will return, and will make sure to time my walk, so I’m back whilst lunch is being served.
