This was easy walking distance from our bed and breakfast and recommended by the hosts. We were warned that portion sizes were large and they are, huge!! Food is good but not spectacular and not cheap either. The restaurant was busy and clearly does well and the service was good.

We were recommended here as the best restaurant in Sintra. Judging by our limited experience of the place, this is not, in itself a huge accolade (the rest seem to be just tourist shafting factories), but nonetheless, this is an extraordinary place with exquisite food, a lovely ambience and among the quirkiest service we have ever seen.
On arrival, the main door was locked. It was 7.55 and we had an 8pm reservation, so we rang the bell. We thought maybe they opened at 8.
After a few moments the waitress appeared. (I call her waitress, but she may have been the owner, the manager or someone’s friend who had been called in for the evenin for all we could tell, but she was the only face of the restaurant we saw.)
She opened the door after the manner of the elderly retainer opening the castle gates (if you saw The Windsors, think Princess Anne’s welcome to Sandringham, or Igor in The Young Frankenstein) standing blocking the entrance with a “They Shall Not Pass!!” expression on her face. We said “Reservation” and with obvious resentment she let us in.
We were therefore surprised to see that the dining room was already half full of diners.
The room is large and elegant and the tables unusually well separated. You are almost unaware that anyone else is there.
Again, the waitress’ demeanour dominated. When I asked for the vegetable tart she wagged a finger and said “No” quite forcibly. I shrank a little and she thought for a second and then said “Si”. I have no explanation for this, but it certainly added to the frivolity of the evening.
And so it went on. She was like a fierce maiden aunt all evening. But we loved it! It was so different and amended to our jaded experience of all restaurants around the world being identical.
But for every abrupt “no” there was a squeeze of the shoulder, pat on the back
The food was very good indeed. It is not Cuisine Minceur - it is good, solid Portuguese fare - but it was very tasty and way above average. The vegetable tart (which was a little stodgy) was accompanied by the most wonderful salad, with a dressing to die for. My companions were also very complimentary of their seafood risottos, their fish and their meat dishes.
So, if you are a curmudgeon, I would suggest that you stay away. If you take joy in people and their quirkiness, definitely go. But be ready to hang loose, really loose ;-)

Saudade

Where Cafe Saudade now stands, there used to be housed the historical Queijadas da Mathilde cheesecake factory from 1888 to 1974.These queijadas de Sintra (cheesecakes) were a favorite of King Ferdinand II (who restored the Pena Palace). During the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, the king gave the factory founder a stamp marked Mathilde, to brand the cheesecakes bound for the royal family. The Cafe Saudade was restored and preserved over a year long renovation in 2008 and opened in the summer of 2009. Recycled and regional materials and resources were used to create an environment that authentic. We pride ourselves for this and and for the fact that our team offers the best service they can.The spaces of the old cheesecake factory are today a cultural reference in Sintra's recent historical background. Its preservation allows us a glimpse into the ancient manufacturing process of the typical queijada de Sintra.Wander through the "Saudade Labyrinth" and fall in love with Sintra. Visit our Art Gallery and explore the various rooms with pieces of furniture that we restored with love and care, and in which we have handcrafts for sale. We host Literary gatherings, jazz and fado Concerts and other cultural activities.

Breakfast was included in stay at sister hotel. A wonderful setting and delicious array of pleasant morning goodies. My wife actually made lunch sandwiches from the leftovers to carry away for an afternoon snack. By the train station, so very convenient to travelers. Coffee was good as well.

Fabrica das Verdadeiras Queijadas da Sapa

Reviewed By Andyvd81

The queijadas da Sapa are typical of Sintra and deserve, in my opinion, to be as famous as Lisbon's pastéis de nata. This quaint bakery and tea room makes and serves the original. Even though it is situated on the street that connect Sintra's train station and historic centre, this place seems to be away from the hustle and bustle. The staff is extremely friendly and took the time to explain every single pastry in detail to help us decide which ones to try (in impeccable English). Enjoying our queijadas here was a very welcome moment to unwind after being stuck in shuttle buses connecting the different palaces for most of the day. If you're in Sintra, make sure to stop by!

We were walking by this cafe and decided to go in for a quick breakfast. Ordered fried eggs and toast. Didn't expect much but toast was a real surprise. Great rustic bread, toasted, buttered and piled high. Eggs lovely. Coffee and mint tea great. All in all a perfect breakfast. Including a second coffee and jam to finish off the mountain of toast, the bill came to 10eur. Thats value!

We (2) ate here during dinner, with starters, main dishes, wine and coffee, we paid around 30 euros.
First of all I must say that the food is very good and tasty. But the service needs to improve, the green wine wasn't cold as it should always be and the staff isn't pleasant at all, they don't have to be smilling all the time but at least they should act as they aren't there making us a favour just by asking us what we would like to order.
Apart from that I would return for the quality of the food.

This is a nice, small, pastry shop and tea house located on the way to the village, not far from the train station, in Estefania. The queijadas are great and the spot is quiet compared to others that are packed in the summer. Unpretentious and friendly. Give a try if you are nearby.
