An Excellent Stay

Reviewed By DaArby

To start, the room is very tidy and clean which I feel is the most important criteria for any hotel. It looks modern as well, with a good view from any floor. It is also reasonably spacious and doesn't feel too cramped. Bed is comfortable and pillows are fluffy. TV works with a good amount of channels. There is also WIFI. All the essentials are provided - towels, kettle, hair dryer, toiletries, fridge, etc. The bath soaps, shampoo and conditioner are specially sourced which is a nice added touch, as was the three different type of tea bags and two types of coffee. Service-wise is pretty standard. The staff were polite, yet quick. Breakfast was marvelous with a surprisingly wide selection of Oriental, Indian and Continental dishes and beverages; in addition to a separate egg station. The overall experience was very positive. I would return again in the future.

Attentive budget hotel in a good location in Little India, Singapore

Reviewed By Rich F

Am currently staying here. The rooms are basic, but well worth the SGD 80 per night I am paying for the one-week stay. Great location cattycorner from the City Square Mall including MRT entrance. Near Mustapha 24-hour shopping. Eateries abound nearby. Why my praise? The aircon in my room failed to turn on. No fan, so it would be hot. Immediate service by the hotel staff. Later that evening, it happened again. The lady on the desk came up and tried. She worked with the remote re-set as well. She said I could sleep in another room (a Saturday night, hotel full too!) and someone would fix it on Sunday. I managed to find a safety pin and reset the remote which then turned on the air con, so problem solved. How many budget hotels have a staff person at 10 pm on a Saturday night? She did her best with a smile. I value that. I recommend the hotel. Quiet, facilities do work and there is service when needed.

My preferred hotel in Singapore

I pass through Singapore a couple of times a year travelling between Europe and Australia and the PERAK HOTEL is my first choice. I've stayed at far more luxurious hotels in Singapore but frankly for me the expense is not worth it. I've also stayed in other budget hotels there and most are just too basic or located where I don't want to be. The PERAK, for me, gets the balance of comfort, convenience of location, cleanliness and price just right. This is not a new hotel, in fact I believe that it's a heritage listed building, so the rooms while not modern have a charm of their own. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, the breakfast is basic but good, the public area is clean and comfortable. The location is fantastic right on the edge of little India and a ten minute walk from Bugis street. I took the MRT from Changing airport, cost is $ 2-70, changed at Bugis junction station and came out of the station less than 100 Mtrs. from the hotel. There's an old saying "you get what you pay for" and in my view, given the cost of hotel accommodation in Singapore, the PERAK offers excellent value for money.

Lousy front desk and hidden hotel policies. Do not book!

Reviewed By jiakalipeng

Overall not a very pleasant experience. Booked a Deluxe Room for two nights from 30th December 2020 to 1st January 2021, with the intention of proposing to my girlfriend in the room on the 30th night. I informed the hotel that 1) I will be proposing, 2) I will have friends coming over to decorate the room while I take my girlfriend out to distract her and 3) if there was anything additional the hotel could offer. Hotel acknowledged and stated clearly that the hotel could not provide anything special because of pandemic related reasons. No issue, I fully understand that. Nevertheless I did not think that they would be anal enough to prevent my friends from entering the room to decorate. However on check-in day, I tried to register my friends while my girlfriend was in the hotel room, to ensure that they could smoothly enter my room while I was out. I was alarmed that their receptionist told me that I could only bring one guest to the room. I highlighted that my friends were coming over just to decorate the room on the 30th, and countdown on the 31st. They were not staying over as guests. The receptionist was not very helpful, as she just kept stressing something about room size or "only can have 1 person". In the end, I did not register any of them because the receptionist was largely uncooperative, and I found out later that only one of my friends was allowed in, even when 1) my girlfriend and I was not in the room at the time to make it max 3 occupants, and 2) she was aware that they were only there to set up the room and not stay. I find her explanation and refusal very rigid. Secondly, with the one guest rule in mind, I assumed that I could at least bring my sister to the room instead. However, she was denied entry at the reception, and the same receptionist came up with another rule saying she was under age (below 18). I clarified that my sister was 1) not staying over and 2) she was under my "adult supervision" 3) she was my sister, not a random suspicious underage girl for other activities. Again, the receptionist gave the usual "hotel policy" without any further clarification or reasoning. My sister went home that day in tears. Not wanting to ruin my proposal, I decided to hold off arguing with your receptionist further. However, I just want to seek clarification about this under-18 rule. I don't think it is a government rule because she just had a staycay in another hotel by herself, so it is either a pandemic rule or a hotel rule. I understand that this area is a red light district, hence security is probably tighter. Perhaps prostitutes are allowed in, hence my 16 year old sister was refused. But at least this could have been communicated to me, with alternatives, reasonings or special arrangements offered to me. However, the receptionist showed zero understanding or empathy throughout. I understand the hotel has some guidelines to follow, but they weren't clear at the start, if not I would not have booked with this hotel, and they were not communicated well to me after I checked in as well. I do not want to mar my happy occasion with such a bad taste in the mouth, hence I have decided to not pursue the matter further. I guess I got what I paid for. Would not recommend. TLDR: wanted to propose, but my friends were not allowed, my sister was rejected, I was subject to non-stop temperature taking as if I was on quarantine instead of staycation. Receptionist extremely unhelpful. Hotel probably does vice activities. Do not book!

Budget gem in a great location

Reviewed By Chocs_912

Located right next to a bus stop and a 5-minute walk from a MRT station, this budget hotel screams value. Two restaurants right at the ground floor of the premises and a very famous Indian restaurant (A2B) within 3 minutes walk away, good food is very close by. Mustafa centra is a 5-minute walk. A no-frills, impeccably clean hotel in a great location - excellent value for money. We stayed there for 9 nights and every morning the cleaning team was prompt to leave our room blushing clean. My request for extra towels were immediately taken care of and seen through all 9 days. 24-hour hot water and air-conditioning were top-notch. Special shout-out to Ms Pam and Richard at the front desk who gave us wonderful tips about their country and made us feel right at home. The room cleaning persons (sorry, I missed taking their names) did a fabulous job every single day! I was travelling with 2 young kids and had requested a room on a higher floor with a double bed. They were able to accommodate me on their 7th floor (not noisy at night) but could provide me with only twin beds. This was a minor blip in the otherwise exceptional service provided my the hotel. Rooms near the lift tend to be a bit noisy throughout the day. Room # 710 was great - 7th floor and far from the lift. I'd recommend this place again to anyone looking for a no-frills budget hotel in a great location.
