9 Children's Museums in Western Norway That You Shouldn't Miss

This is a classic Sunday outing along a track with beautiful scenery all the way. You walk the gravel road to Landåsvatnet and turn left towards Skjepåsen just before the lake. At the next crossing there is a small-scale map and a signboard towards Eventyrskogen- a unique visual presentation of Norwegian fairytales along the forest road. This is a very popular goal, especially for all children. At the next crossing, turn right back to Landåsvatnet to complete the roundtrip.

The Norwegian Fisheries Museum is about the fishing history and coastal culture of Norway. The old wharf side warehouses and the harbour with traditional boats makes a great setting for our stories about fishing traditions in Norway. Explore the history of the sea by immersing yourself in interesting artefacts and stories, or engage the whole family in a multitude of new activities. The cafe serve lunches. Rowboat rental Getting there The historic ferry "Beffen" leaves every hour from Bryggen between 11 am and 4 pm, only weekends in May, all days in June, July, August and September. The museum is a 20-minute walk from Bryggen, or less than 15 minutes from the cruise ship terminal at Bontelabo. A 5-minute bus-ride from Bryggen, numbers 3, 4, 5, 6, 36, 39, 83 go past the museum.

The Norwegian Children's Museum is one of a handful of its kind in Europe. Our exhibitions and activities are about almost anything connected with children and childhood. A children's museum combines the traditional museum's focus on documentation and the exhibition of objects from the past with the young person's wish to participate, investigate and play. The museum farm Kolbeinstveit comes alive in summer with in-house host, farm anmials, events, concerts and exhibitions. The farmhouse and the barn, date to about 1850. The Guggedal storehouse from 1281, Rogaland County's oldest wooden buiding, also stands here. Hosts serve traditional local food like butter porridge and Suldal "wraps". The farmyard is a fine playground where children can play.

Nesasjøhuset houses the headquarter of Ryfylkemuseet. The old seawarf is located directly near the fjord at Nordenden, in the autenthic and idyllic town of Sand. Sand is located along the National Tourist road Ryfylke (no.13). Our exhibition 'Kvitebjørnen' (The Polarbear) is an interactive exhibition for kids which encourages them to play and use their imagination. The exhibition is based on a story by a local writer, Rasmus Løland (1861-1907). Løland is one of the most important authors within the nynorsk children's literature tradition. In both the story and the exhibition the kids meet a fairytale world where they can dress up and become a king, a princess or a police, fight the trolls and climb into the castles. The book is also available for reading. Ryfylkemuseet is a decentralised regional museum with branches in Forsand, Strand, Hjelmeland, Suldal, Sauda, Finnøy, Rennesøy and Kvitsøy. A lot of these sites are located along the National Tourist Road Ryfylke (Rv 13).
