7 Wine Tours & Tastings in Azores That You Shouldn't Miss

September 24, 2021 Enedina Augsburger

The nine islands that make up the Azores are in fact the peaks of some of the world's tallest mountains, reaching from deep beneath the Atlantic. The once-uninhabited, volcanic archipelago now hosts thousands of tourists every year who flock to the islands for sun, sand and verdant mountain scenery. From the beaches of Praia da Vitoria to the bustling marina of Horta, to the bubbling volcanic ground "ovens" of Furnas, these islands offer unparalleled--and unusual--adventures to discover.

We live here on Terceira temporarily with the US military so we’ve seen a lot of the island on our own. But it was on of our guys last weekends and one guy hadn’t been here very long. This trip was absolutely everything we could have asked for. The island is beautiful and the food and wine and moonshine was delicious!! Our tour guide was so funny and made the tour! Highly recommend even if you live here it was nice to be able to drink and not worry about driving.

An incredible day with a fantastic guide- Lucia was enthusiastically infectious as she took us round Pico. It was not the best of days up on the mountain, but then we also saw the changes which brings its own beauty- and plenty of animals who she knew so well. We had expected a dry, volcanic landscape and were bowled over with the diversity of this island. We had a beautiful lunch with Pico wine. Although the jeep had broken down and we went in a van, I don't think we missed anything too major because of it. Lucia was a careful driver. The lava cave was a first for us. My only regret is that I forgot the 20 euros in my purse was for the pick up at sao roque so I had no tip money for her. A day of surprises, much joy and lasting memories. Thank you Lucia.

This tour was so much fun! There were 6 of us. I would suggest doing this tour early on in your vacation if you can. That way you.can go back to the places they take you and enjoy again. Also you will just be that more knowledgeable when eating out. We were surprised by some of the foods we ate, I don't want to spoil the surprises! We loved most everything, some of us were braver than others to try new things. There truly was something for everyone. Diogo and Nadja were our hosts. Diogo was such a great tour guide as we walked through the city and Nadja went on ahead to make sure everything was ready at our next stop. Loved every minute, thanks so much. We have some great memories and things to share with the folks at home.

Having a veg partner and personally not being being a big meat eater, we really wanted to experience Cozido and were very skeptical about where to go for it. Enter Ali and Caroline. They offered a complete experience which included a trip to the cooking spot and pulling our own meals out of the earth.. The food was delicious and at no point did we feel that we were missing out by not eating meat. We also couldn’t have asked for a better setting, sitting amongst one of the world’s largest private gin collection ???? Special thanks to Caroline and Ali for opening their doors to us, especially on Christmas when everything else on the island was shut and the awesome hospitality and an amazing experience! Can’t wait to visit you guys again and stay on your estate this time around..:

We had such a great time on this whale and dolphin watching tour. We thoroughly enjoyed riding in the zodiacs. It was especially thrilling when it went extra fast because you knew we were about to see something wonderful, and we did! Multiple times! We saw 9 different sperm whales and several different pods of spotted and bottle-nose dolphin. Our captain was great, as was Maria, our guide. She was very knowledgeable, and you could tell she had a true passion for these magnificent animals. This trip was a definite highlight in Pico!

We really enjoyed this tour with Rafael. He was the perfect host! Because it was low season we were the only ones on the tour. First he took us to a wine and cheese shop which soon became our favourite place in Ponta Delgada! We went back so many times now that we understood what to order. I would suggest doing this tour early on in your holiday so you can understand the wine and cheese you purchase later on! Rafael gave us very interesting info regarding the wine and cheese and there was plenty for us to sample. Highly recommend!
