Skofja Loka Museum

The Museum takes up all of the castle inside and the field out back. Not “the highest university level” for the collection but that does not negate the excellence of the material and presentation and understanding of the historical significance. The two women at the ticket desk inside are fluent in several languages and know their history and offer additional information. I am always amazed at how engaging and energetic and informative Slovenian people in the museums, shops, stores, and cafes are to be of service and share their town and country.

Skofja Loka Castle & Museum

The Škofja Loka Museum is housed in the Škofja Loka Castle, whose imposing exterior dominates the town below. The rich museum collections bear witness to the past and the present day of the territory along the Selška and Poljanska Sora rivers, which formed the Škofja Loka Dominion ruled by the Bishops of Freising, Bavaria, back in the day (973-1803). The Museum's archaeology, history, cultural history, art, ethnology, natural history and sports collections, as well as an open-air museum present the cultural heritage of the Škofja Loka area and also place it in the wider Slovenian and European contexts.

Charming little town, nice for families and for single or couple travellers as well. There is cute little playground with view of castle and square where you can have a nice cup of coffe... Or you can get lost in history while wondering through town with long art and craft tradition, so you can get a good deal for local products as well :-) From the castle on the hill (5 min walk) there is a stunning view, if you have time visit the museum as well. It is a great peek into medieval times and past glory. Round the castle there are many paths in beautiful nature and views worth seeing. If you have time and own transportation head to Poljanska valley and Selska valley.
