Reviewed By KjellOGLocated a few hundred meters from the German border, the star fort Bourtange was built by William of Orange to control the access between the Spanish-friendly Groningen and Germany. It was the scene of several battles over the centuries. In the 21st Century, the fort is a living museum with shops, restaurants, a hotel - and houses where people live. I came across the hotel quite by accident as I was looking for a hotel "just across the border". The location is less than a kilometer inside the Netherlands and easily reached from the motorways. Since this hotel is in a museum, the reception is also the tourist information. The only issue is that it closes at 17:00 - which was made clear in the confirmation they sent. Too bad I didn't pay attention and took the extremely scenic route along the Elbe and ended up stuck in a two-hour long ferry queue... A little before 17:00, a lady from the hotel called and asked when we would arrive. They had a Plan B with safes for keys and information. Excellent service, I thought - saving my bacon so I didn't stand there looking the fool. The room was in one of the former barracks of the fortress. It was large with a king size bed. It seemed newly built or renovated and very clean. The same goes for the bathroom which had a bathtub and a shower. Breakfast is included and served in a separate building. Again - the building seemed newly renovated on the inside. The exterior was very much 1742. The food was fresh, locally sourced, and tastefully presented. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but several inside the fortress that serve excellent food. Walking distance? Well, shorter than in most five-star hotels. Incidentally, access to the forterss' museum buildings is free for hotel guests. As we drove off, my wife insisted on returning. I agreed.

Super comfortable beds
Reviewed By regulartraveler374Clean, quiet, spacious and great price/quality ratio. Family was traveling across Europe by car, wanted to stay away from main cities. This place was the closest we found to the remarkable star fortress of Bourtange, up against German border. Hotel Bourtange is a lot like a B&B, which I consider a good thing. We arrived late in the evening and couldn't find an open restaurant on the way, but owner was happy to make us some soup and sandwiches. They had triple and quad rooms with real beds, no rollaways or foldout sofas, and the beds were incredibly comfortable. Breakfast was included and was substantial. Would recommend also for elderly travelers including groups.

Fabulous Surprise find
Reviewed By Jane SWhat a lovely place. We came into Holland from Germany via the Ems tunnel wanting to see Vesting Bourtange and just drove in off the road. The hotelier could not have been more accommodating so we have stayed two days in one of the cabins. Meals were good and good value. Breakfast comes to you on a little cart and the bread was still warm and the boiled eggs hot. The cabin was clean, spacious warm and comfortable and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Reviewed By Bart vDe Friessche poort ligt lekker centraal in vesting Bourtange. De kamer (en badkamer) is lekker ruim. De eigenaren zijn vriendelijk en willen je graag helpen. Ontbijt is ook prima. Al met al een prima B&B en zeer aan te raden.
