If you want to lay awake all night acosted by noises from neighbors behaving like barnyard animals with blatant, maybe militant, disregard for other guests, then this is the place! If you want rest and quiet stay away.

This is a simple, inexpensive, clean hotel in the center of Zaruma. No frills, but no disappointments or problems. I got a single room, which is small. It has a small desk and dresser, a working television (Spanish), and a small, single bed. For $15 a night (May 2022) it was fine for a couple nights. They do have bigger rooms for couples and families. The room was clean with maid service daily. The hot water in the sink and shower worked perfectly and the water pressure in the shower was very strong. The towels were replaced daily and were comfortable. The wifi was strong and worked first try, I was able to stream sports on my laptop at night. The hotel is quiet at night, but there is no air conditioner or heater (not needed) so open windows will allow you to hear the enthusiastic roosters pre-dawn and the outside traffic, I don't think it would be a problem for most. No elevator, so you'll have to climb the stairs. One unusual rule is that you leave your room key with the front desk whenever you go out, and they give it to you when you come back in. I guess so the key won't get lost or duplicated? They have video surveillance throughout the common areas, and the desk people can see the stairs and such, it felt very secure. The on-site underground parking is VERY tight, you may feel more comfortable parking on the street. They also told us they had a second lot nearby. A good place to stay. Zaruma isn't very big, so you'll see it all in a day or two, and this place fits the bill.

I had actually planned to stay just one night at the Hosteria El Jardin in Zaruma but ended up spening three nights there. First, because I found Zaruma an atmospheric town and second because I really enjoyed some quiet hours in the beautiful lush garden and on the roof terrace watching the bird life. It is almost a botanical garden and small bird sanctuary in itself, and nature lovers will certainly like this place very much. The hosteria is located outside of the town center. Walking up-hill to the center proved to be quite strenuous and time-consuming (around 30 minutes) but a taxi will take you there in less than five minutes for a moderate fare. The room might not be the strongest asset of the hosteria but it was clean and, at 30 USD per night, more comfortable than you would find in most of Europe.

The hotel is in the centre of Zaruma. The rooms are cleaned every day, towels changed every day. If you take the time to talk to the staff (only in Spanish) they are very friendly and helpful. The rooms at the back have AMAZING views and are quieter.
